Show A Sickness and I Aspirin has long been the most Important friend of people with arand other types of pain. It is considered the safest of all drugs, considering that Americans alone, take some 90 million tablets a day. History has it that earlllest man, who used the poppy for its opium, must also have been familiar with the use of the willow tree and wlntergreen for its salicylates (aspirin is a form of salicylate). Willow bark was well known to the early Romans and Hippocrates as a remedy for pain and fever. The early American colonists found American Indians using willow tree leaves and roots for fever, headache and lumbago. A pharmaceutical expert states that aspirin has long been the stang, dard against which drugs are measured for and fever fighting effectiveness. Aspirin is not without it's side -- effects. Included are Irritation of the stomach with heart burn, indigestion, nausea, vomiting and even bleeding. Allergic reactions Include skin rash, hives and sometimes asthma. Those with known allergic reactions need to be cautious about taking any aspirin like product. High doses of asperln can cause ringing in the ears. Any reaction should be reported to a doctor. Aspirin Is Just one aspect of arthritis treatment and can do harm as well as good. Pregnant women or those scheduled for surgery should consult their doctor before using asperln. Some authorities believe it should not be taken for 12 hours after drinking alcohol, which itself irritates the stomach and makes it more likely to bleed. Persons with heaving problems should mention this to any doctor who prescribes regular use of aspirin. Most authorities agree that the safest way to take aspirin is to use the "candy coated" (enteric -- coated) tablets and to take them right after or even with meals. If this is not possible take with a full glass of fluid water or better yet milk. Some will advise taking an antacid along with the asperln.
