HORTON, JR. It is ve-d..jUful that the Beaver meeting had any connection, but a company known as the UtahSouth-er- n Railroad Extension with William Jennings as Preside A was organized three days later In Salt Lake City. The object of this company was to "extend a line of railroad southwards from the southern terminus of the Utah Southern, on the northern border of Juab County, to the 87:30 parallel, on the border of Washington County, a distance of two hundred miles, passing through the counties of Juab, Sanpete, Bea- Limit We wish to express our thanks to the members of the Minersvllle Fire Department for their quick response to the fire alarm we have had three fires this week. One of which could have caused serious damage without the help of fire trucks from Milford and Beaver. Townspeople would be wise to fire proof their property by clean-ing up weeds and trails around build ings and corrals where fires start easily in this dry, hot weather. Six weeks later, William Jennings and John Sharp, President and Vice President respectively, made a trip to the south to make a definite decision relative to the route of the extension. Their first stop was the coal fields of Sanpete County. Their problem was whether or not the coal beds and resources here were Important enough to build the line through Salt Creek Canyon. Certainly there was a greater population In the Sanpete areatorecom-me- nt that route. On the other hand, the more southwesterly direction through Millard and Beaver Counties would present superior advantages in the matter of grade, and therefore would be much less expensive for railroad building purposes. It Is not apparent whether they made a definite decision at this time, or waited until the Utah Southern had completed their road toChlcken Creek in Southern Juab four years later. However, there was at least a general awareness that the western route was favored at this time. " By the latter part of 1875, the railroad in Utah had become more than just a local Issue, and other localities were picking up interest. V&San Bernardino Times of December 24, carried an article entitled, "Let Us Have A Railroad," and mentioned the desire there was in Los Angeles at the time to connect with the Utah Southern. Notwithstanding all the agitation, however, no more track was laid for four years. 1 Thereafter ver, We had one entry from Maudell Club.
