I aackie Williams Reference was made last week In this column to remarks made by Paul B. Dunn at the recent IDS Conference. The presentation was so positive concerning aging that It seems aapropiiate to quote it in part hare "Aging should only become a hateful time if it means the stoppage of growth, the withering of dreams and the silence of feelings. Be added that these qualities have nothing to do with time and everything to do with heart. History la full of people who got better as they got older, said Elder Dunn. Michelangelo didnt undertake the Slstlne Chapel until he was 69 years of age; Geothe, the German genius of literature, didnt finish his classic 'Taust" until he was 81 years old; Herbert Hoover took on the job of coordinating world food supplies for 38 countries at age 72 and was the Representative to Belgium at age 84. Thomas Edison was still Inventing at age 75; Winston Churchill was leading Great Brltlan through World War n when he was 65; Albert Schweitzer was roaming Africa when he was. in his 80s; Benjamin Franklin was a key political figure well past the age of 75. Moses was more than 80 when he led the Isrealltes. Quoting General Douglas McArthur, Elder Dunn said, ' Live with enthusiasm. Nobody grows old by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the sUn, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt, as young as your as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair.' m this modern age of sophistication and progress, it is disturbing that the old adage, age before beauty, seems to have been reversed, Elder Dunn said. Never before has there been so much emphasis on youth and beauty. And while youth and beauty are cherished attributes, Age and experience can be tremendous assets. ! " 'Let us take advantage of having parents, grandfathers, grandmothers, friends and neighbors .around us. May we reach out to them not with pity, but with love."
