"This year's ski meet has the potential to be, the best ever," said meet project officer Sherman Black. "The point system, number of races and types of races offered will add to the meet's competitiveness." Incoming teams will face tough competition from Hill's skiing foursome: team captain Glen Gemelli, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron; Gary Ellsworth, Det. 19, 4400th Management Engineering Squadron; Les Harrell, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing; and Ken Snoy, Directorate of Materiel Management. Among the four they have 22 years of racing experience. Glen Gemelli, from Torrington, Conn., has been racing seven years while Gary Ellsworth, a hometown favorite from Ogden, is an experienced United States Ski Association expert class set racer. Les Harrell of Romeo, Mich., has been skiing since he was nine years old and racing for nine years. Ken Snoy, from Ohio, has come a long way in his two years of racing. Harrell placed seventh overall last year with Ellsworth and Gemelli in the top 10 in two events while Snoy finished in the top 25 percent of the field. Months of practice by team hopefuls made team selection difficult. "The competition for our team this year was the toughest ever," said team captain Gemelli. "Our independent skiers are good and a few delayed the selection of the top four until two weeks ago." Independent racers Sig Mayer, 6514th Test Squadron; Milt Mosichuk, 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron; and Jerry Hain, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, are a strong backup and are expected to place high in the final results. New to this year's independent racers from here is Christine Queen, Public Affairs Office. Although she is inexperienced in the art of racing, she plans to give it her best effort as will all of the Hill skiers.
