Dolan Jr. Have you ever considered how your vote directly affects the retention of your military benefits? If not, consider these points. We, the American people, have a right to decide which direction the issues facing our country will take us and who will represent us as leaders in these issues. This process is called democracy. However, when a person does not vote, he or she fails to support the fundamentals of this democracy. Unfortunately, many Air Force people fit into this category. Our representatives play a vital part in establishing the laws of our country which affect both our lifestyle and careers. Reliable people in uniform In Don keep low profile By Maj. T. W. King Fort Lee AFS, Va. There's an old adage which holds "put out sight, out of mind." I submit the same may be true of the military. Recently the Air Force strengthened its policy on the wearing of the combination-on- e uniform at events, unless of a purely personal nature. Seems a lot of Air Force people showed up at luncheons, conferences, etc., in shirt sleeves and open-colluniforms while their civilian counterparts were in coat and tie. Comfort notwithstanding, the Air Force obviously came off looking less professional. Perhaps we in the Air Force ought to individually reconsider what not wearing our uniform on more "civilian" occasions does for us. More comfort, less conspicuous, less public awareness and concern. Less awareness and concern, less willingness to of ar pay for our services uphill battles for our leaders trying to win pay raises for us. Net results: short in our wallets. When the Vietnam era put the military in low public esteem, many military people felt a need to keep a low profile, "no need to draw attention to myself." Now, concern and respect for the military in this country seem to be regrowing. We need to help it all we can by proudly showing up in uniform at more occasions where uniforms are not mandatory. Make the decision yourself. Let the taxpayer see what kind of really valuable people are now in uniform. Help our leaders win pay raises by making ourselves more visible as Air Force members. All lovers know the adage "absence makes the heart grow fonder" is not true. Apparent absence, such as not appearing in uniform, simply lets the public (AFNS) forget! The plain fact is these representatives are more receptive to citizens and interest groups who exercise their right to vote. If more military people voted and were represented as a larger voting constituency, perhaps then our voice would be heard! Isn't it a sad irony that while thousands of airmen, soldiers and sailors have given their lives to preserve our democracy and our right to vote, we as military people have one of the poorest voting records in the country" Due to the combined effects of high inflation rates and military pay caps in recent years, increasing numbers of military households have become eligible to participate in the food stamp program.
