It's called a geode, which Is a slab cut from a rock. It's a hobby (called rockhoundlng) of MSgt. Roger G. Onstad, an air traffic controller with the 1881 Comm. Sq. "I've collected rocks all over Montana and Utah, and from Wyoming to California," Onstad said, "so I guess I could be called an amateur geologist." The rocks are cut with a special saw and then polished. Most geodes have a cavity lined with crystals or mineral matter. A lot of rocks are beautiful on the Inside. "However," Onstad went on, "you'd never think so by fust looking at a corroded rock on the ground or beside the road." The geodes were presented to Sergeant Onstad during his Meritorious Service Medal presentation and retirement ceremony. After 25 years and 8 months of active duty, "I leave the Air Force with regret," he stated. "It's been a good life and I'm going to miss it." (U.S. Air Force Photo by SSgt.
