IT IS A PARADOX that material wealth does not bring happiness. Sweden and Australia, for example, are two nations with high standards of living, yet they are also the nations with the highest suicide rates followed closely by the United States. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian political dissident and internationally respected writer, has said, "After the suf- ferings of decades of violence and oppression, the human soul longs for things higher, warmer and purer than those offered by today's mass living habits, introduced by the revolting invasion of publicity, by TV stupor and intolerable music." " 1 THIS SITUATION is reflected in the fact that Americans have been asked to cut back on their use of gasoline in order to conserve the dwindling supplies of fossil fuels, yet gasoline consumption continues to increase. And a general consensus holds that the average American is paid more today for doing less. Admiral Rickover points out, "The unwillingness to act and accept responsibility is a symptom of America's growing with the status-quo- . The result is of a paralysis the spirit, entirely uncharacteristic of Americans during the previous stages of our history." j Starts 1 Sept. I fat h I us Mm Vegetation control is a necessity. Last year California had several fires resulting in loss of homes and property due to lack of vegetation control. The causes were determined to be lightning storms and arson. The loss totalled billions of dollars and people involved probably never will get over that experience. This happened only because someone was careless. REMEMBER TO KEEP your property clear of weeds and grass because it can spread in seconds if ignited. Make sure you keep matches away from children and try to explain to them the damage fire can do when used the wrong way. The hot dry summer months, with little or no rain, are the most hazardous in vegetation control. The fire departments throughout the state spend valuable time on grass fires. This time spent on grass fires is money from the taxpayers' pockets. WEBER COUNTY, to date, has had 60 emergencies for a total of 50 acres burned. The picnic area here on base has been closed because of the vegetation growth; the fire hazard, at this time, is the most extreme and extra caution should be taken. Layton Fire Department reports that, as of have had 30 fires resulting in five acres burned. mid-Jul- y, they To stress this point, consider this. SCHOLARS HAVE pointed out that more empires in the history of the world have toppled because of inner rot than from external threats. Solzhenitsyn underscores his fear of this being the case with western democracies by pointing out that the Soviet Union has no intention of going to war at the present time because it has gained everything that it wanted during the last 30 years through mostly peaceful means. Yet, the human spirit that rises to meet the challenge of sacrifice is often debased during periods of affluence.
