In conjunction with this proclaimed Scott proclamation, Matheson, Utah State Governor, a signed declaration designating May as "Utah Small Business Week." Those participating in the ceremonies in the governor's office were Col. 22-2- 8 Charles Wheeler, director, Procurement and Production ; Ralph Quarles, assistant contractor Relations Office; Clair Hopkins, district director, Small Business Administration (SBA), Salt Lake City and Patrick Ver- furth, Procurement Center representative for SBA, Hill AFB. Significant role The weekly observance was designed to call attention to the significant role small business plays in local, state and national economy. Small businesses seeking new opportunities have provided a vast array of goods and services that enable this Nation to enjoy a standard of living unequalled in the world. Small business continues to provide the avenue by which so many have made the American dream of a better life for themselves and their families become a reality. Small beginnings Governor Matheson stated in the declaration, "Our nation was founded upon the basis of free and independent enterprise. Our forefathers, the free men who pioneered the West, who established small farms, who tended small stores, and who were instrumental in founding small business concerns, greatly furthered the free enterprise system.
