Show Page HILL TOP TIMES 22 17. 15)76 September J HALL OF SPORTS Jjp"1' The 1976 college and pro football seasons have made quite a debut with some very interesting results. With four of the top 10 college teams losing and one being tied it seems that the season is off to one of the best starts in recent memory. It only goes to prove that when good athletes get together, almost anything can happen. A new "Top 20" will be selected this week. Any loss during a season makes it nearly impossible to win a National Championship and so such teams as Southern California, Alabama, Arizona State, Nebraska and Texas will have a climb to move back toward the top. It has been almost unheard of to have five of the top 10 ranked teams to bite the dust in the very first week. Box Elder hung on for a 4 win over Weber and Bear River defeated Logan 28-- Bonneville went to Pocatello and lost to Highland 28-- Davis High went to Salt Lake and came back with a 10--8 loss to Judge Memorial. In Region Two, Layton 16-1- 6. 0. came through unscathed as a schedule change gave them a bye. The other five teams played their third practice game and all dropped hard fought decisions. After the action it would seem that no clear-ou- t favorite has emerged so some very interesting hard-nose- d games are in the offing. pre-seas- on Sticks With West The pick from here is still West High of Salt Lake in and with Springville and Bingham High looks very tough in Cedar showing strength. The Deseret News picks the top teams in their Tuesday issue each week in the four Utah high school football classifications. 4-- A Dorsett of Pitt Starred as Tony Dorsett of the University of Pittsburgh ran for 181 yards to seal a Notre Dame defeat, Tony averaged 188 yards per game in the four years he played against the Tony certainly shows his "Fighting Irish" as the split 3-- A I listened High School Schedule this week: Region One: Logan at Roy, p.m. ; Bear River at Weber, 3 p.m. ; Sky View at Bonneville, 4 p.m. Region Two: Clearfield at Bountiful, 7:30 p.m. ; Layton at Ogden 4:30 p.m.; and Viewmont at Ben Lomond, 4:30 p.m. Region Five: Murray at Davis, 7:30 p.m. 4 Three Local .College Games Weber State is at Western Illinois; Utah is at Rice University and there are three home games for Utah college fans tomorrow - Colorado State at Brigham Young University; Long Beach State at Utah State; and Westminister will play Fort Lewis. On Sept. 25 Weber State will open at home against Nevada-La- s Vegas and Utah will host Oregon. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. Special priced tickets for Weber State and Utah University football games are available at the Civilian Recreation Ticket Office. 2-- 2. leading candidacy for the "Heisman Trophy." Football fans are certainly pampered these days with all the TV and radio coverage. Channel Four (KCPX) has a one-hoshow each Sunday and covers six or more college games at noon. The early indication shows that four or five NFL games will be aired every week so we should all be filled to the brim. Utah college football teams showed some strength last week but only Westminister won. BYU showed a strong defense but lost the game on a bad snap on an attempted punt. Weber State scared Long Beach State, and maybe themselves, before dropping a 19-- 7 decision. Utah State started badly against Arkansas and then nearly pulled off a stunner, but couldn't 0 when they had good momentum stop Arkansas on a going. Utah gets underway this week. ur 3rd-and-2- Don't Turn That Dial The Oakland win over Pittsburgh reminds fans that you can't afford to leave the TV too soon or you may miss the winner. Washington's win over the New York Giants also kept fans on the edge of their rocker. It certainly looks like a very Baseball Still Alive With all the football it hardly seems that the baseball season is still alive but both the National League East and American League West are still very much in doubt. It does seem that football has taken over; and did you see Canada defeat Russia in hockey on Channel 7? The final Demolition Derby (Championship) will be held at y Ride Lagoon (tomorrow) at 7 p.m. Pick up the Lagoon Pass Special Coupon $10 per car for up to 10 people on Oct. 2 and 3 and your Demolition Derby Ticket at the Ticket Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. thrilling season. On the local High School scene, Roy visited Skyview and for the third straight week were scored on first. Skyview showed an outstanding running game in the first half and only scrambling Roy QB Jim McMahon kept his team in contention the first half with a bomb. The final score of Roy 13, 7 a Skyview gives Roy very important win over a very fine competitor. &Al REAL ESTATE t REAL ESTATE REAL ESTATE f I "NEW CONSTRUCTION WEEK" OPEN HOUSE OPEN HOUSE o TODAY T I tn 5543 South Karen Dr., Uinfah 00 OJ J LU an (off Old Comb I Rood) I I 'i acre with water rights, 4 bedrooms, 2 boths, double goroge with workshop, fireplaces.
