June 20 Do's,Don'ts Of Holding Political Office EDITOR'S NOTE: Do you know your political rights as a citizen of the United States? Are you, as a federal employee, allowed to hold a political office? Can you contribute money to or speak out on behalf of a political candidate? Can you be disciplined or even wind up in jail for political activities? Read Captain Perf ilio's article appearing in this issue and in the next issue of the Hill Top Times for answers to these and other questions. You may save yourself some headaches and possible disciplinary or criminal action. Today's article will feature some things which you are permitted and encouraged to do as a responsible citizen. Make monetary contributions to political parties or organizations or committees on behalf of candidates, but not to a candidate personally. There are legal limitations on the manner and amount of political contributions. No individual shall make contributions totaling in the aggregate more than $25,000 in any calendar year, totaling more than $1,000 on behalf of any particular candidate in any calendar year; or exceeding $100 in currency on behalf of any campaign of any candidate for federal office. For purposes of the $25,000 limitation, contributions made with respect to a particular election are deemed to be made in the calendar year of that election even though actually made in another year.
