What does patriotism mean to you? Is it that you stand, face the flag, and place your hand over your heart as the National Anthem is played prior to sporting events? Or is there more to it than that? Patriotism is an attitude, a feeling, an emotional affection, it is a word that means love; more specifically, love for your country. What runs through your mind while you are standing with your hand over your heart as the flag is raised and the Star Spangled Banner sounds in the background? Are you thinking about how well you hope your team will play? Or are you thinking of the thousands of men and women who gave their lives so that "our flag was still there?" And as the flag reaches the top of the pole are you filled with anxiety for the start of the game, or are you filled with pride and thankfullness that our flag does, indeed, "yet wave, over the land of the free and the home of t he brave ' " When you recite the Pledge of Allegiance, do you mumble through it hoping you don't look too conspicuous and wishing you could sit down? Are you sure you understand it? "I pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands. . ." This means you are ready and willing to give up your comforts, your money and fortunes, and even your life so that flag will still wave. ". . .One nation, under God, indivisible. . ." This means one united country, guided by God, that cannot be divided by any enemy or force. ". . .With liberty and justice for all." chiefs. The contest was part of a program to build patriotism among branch personnel and appreciation for the American heritage. Other activities included special bicentennial decorations and displays as well as a special "Spirit of 76" display built by Garth Helgesen around the Freedom Train theme which is now displayed in the Bay P foyer of Building 100. 1 Paul Bingham, Directorate of Maintenance, Aircraft, 31 years. And if you are called upon to defend her, do it as a mother would defend her child.
