Show April 11, 5 Page HILL TOP TIMES 11)75 Pregnancy policy changes Separation from the Air Force of women who are pregnant is now voluntary under new Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force policy. The policy change follows a study by DoD and the military branches that concluded involuntary separation for pregnancy is not desirable. The new policy resulting from the study shows up in changes to Air Force regulations on separation of officers CENTERS and airmen. Former policy required involuntary separation for pregnancy, unless a waiver to remain on active duty was requested and approved. Under the new policy, women may remain on active duty unless they request separation. Although waiver requests were previously required for pregnant women to remain on active duty, Air Force officials say that a liberal policy for granting waivers has been in effect for the past several months. The voluntary separation policy does not apply to enlisted women who are pregnant at the time of enlistment or entry on active duty. They were not medically qualified for enlistment and are subject to discharge from the service. Personnel officials say that the new policy recognizes the changing status of women in the military services and will permit those who can meet both service and personal obligations to continue a military career. Further details of the pregnancy separation policy are available at Hill Consolidated Base Personnel Offices, ext. 3931. J L I f """"0 L ' mr re jfwkk ' " (AFNS) I i . Proudly we hail... The conference recommended that shift workers have every to their Air opportunity to attend courses that directly relate Force job Air Force officials agreed, but went a step further and said, t workers should have reasonable access to the voluntary educational opportunities available on a base whether or not thev ate directly job related." In evaluating the recommendation, education officials knew that the same range of courses offered at night can't be offered are during the clay lecause instructors and enough students not normally available. However, in a message to commands last September, they encouraged exploration of at least two approaches: broader reasonable adjustment of shift daytime course offerings and work to participate in evening classes.
