SILLETTI rl KbAL I T Elderly QUESTION: I've always complained about real estate taxes, but now that I am on social security, it seems to be harder than ever to meet each increase. Is it this way for all age groups? ANSWER: Unfortunately, no. During the last census, it was determined that elderly Americans, hard pressed at best to survive on fixed incomes, paid almost twice as high a percentage of their Incomes for property taxes than any other age group. Homeowners 65 or older paid more than 8 percent of their Incomes for real estate taxes. Those from 55 to 64 paid 4.8 percent, and all other age groups paid 4 percent or less. QUESTION: I keep hearing about how real estate is a good way to become financially independent. Is this wishful thinking or are there facts to back up this claim?
