Sixty vehicles were processed over the scales in a three hour period, their owners receiving actual gross vehicle weight and tire loading data, plus a Camper Safety Checklist. A brief mechanical inspection was also conducted. Since the Safety Office has continued to receive inquiries about possible future weighing programs, it plans to continue this activity as a summer camper safety project. "The gross vehicle weight data obtained so far during our camper safety project could easily be considered alarming," stated Capt. Gary W. Blomc, Safety Office. The total rated gross vehicle weight of all campers weighed was 375,100 pounds. Total actual weight exceeded 380,000. This relatively good aggregate loading factor of 101 percent deteriorates badly if trucks manufactured in 1972 and 1973 are removed from consideration. Pickups from model years 12 through 1971 showed an aggregate loading factor of 105 percent. were weighed, with Thirty-fiv- e 18 going overweight by a total of 17.010 pounds. This means that, on the average, each of those overloaded trucks was 945 pounds above its rated gross vehicle weight, carry ing a loading factor of approximately 115 percent. An examination of individual cases can be even more startling. One unit exceeded its rated gross vehicle weight by more than a ton, hitting a loading factor of 146 percent. Fou" other vehicles were weights. Discussions of special interest thousand pounds each, showing loading factors in excess of 120 percent . Tires presented a relatively bright spot in the total picture. With minor exceptions, people had selected tires capable of supporting the actual weight of their vehicles. However, all loading statistics may be regarded as optimistic, since many of these units were not fully loaded with supplies and passengers.
