Upon graduation from the Air War College in 1952, he was assigned to Andrews AFB, Md., where he served as Director of Operations for the Military Air Transport Service. From there he went to Dover AFB, Del., Receives Meritorious Service Medal (one year) and later, Director of Transportation. In June 1960 he was named to organize and head AFLC's new Directorate of Data Systems. He became Executive Director, Logistics Services, with the Defense Supply Agency at Alexandria, Va., in February 1962 and was later named deputy director of the organization in 1964. In August 1966 he became commander of AFLC's Warner Robins Air Materiel Area, Robins AFB, Ga., prior to assuming command of the Thirteenth Air Force two years later. Among his military decorations, General Gideon wears the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Air Medal and Bronze Star Medal. He is a command pilot. in 1954, serving as commander, Transport Wing. During this assignment he directed the multimillion dollar expansion program which made Dover the world's largest transoceanic freight terminal of the time.
