One method being used to cut expenses is to review excess and surplus inventories to determine if equipment and material can be modified and used in lieu of purchasing new items. A typical example of this type of savings was the elimination of the need to purchase nitrogen storage tanks. Main tenance Directorate's Missile and Ordinance Repair Section had a requirement for a nitrogen storage facility in their cleaning operations. Instead of ordering new tanks and control valves, industrial engineering personnel started researching surplus catalogues. They located several helium "top off tanks" from the missile surplus inventory Bo-ma- rc which they installed to form a twin bank nitrogen cascade system. Surplus Fittings By using surplus fittings, valves, and regulators obtained from the Titan and Bomarc installation phase-ou- t program, a complete functional system was built to hold and supply the nitrogen needed in the re- non plug. The new motors are of the same design as the old ones. As a result of this design the new motors could fail in the field for the same reason as the old motors. Finally it was found by moving the brake solenoid 180 degrees that only the two wires to the brake solenoid were required in the brake housing. These wires were also rerouted under the brake retainer housing through holes in the retainer. The other three wires were then in a position that they could go to the power inlet plug directly without go-- The rerouting of the wires eliminated the crowded condition within the brake housing and allowed the brake to as designed. Materiel Management submitted the suggestion to San Antonio AMA for evaluation and incorporation into the appropriate technical order. Authorization Given As of Oct. 2, 1968, a letter of authorization was given Maintenance by OOAMA's Materiel Management Directorate. The authority was to rerout this wiring. This letter of authority is to remain in effect until the technical order is changed by San Antonio AMA. Maintenance is maintaining a log of the hoists and work cages by serial number as they are being reworked and modified. The "fix" will save the Air Force $1 97,300 during this and the next two Fiscal Years.
