Dor-in- e Johnson does. Mrs. Johnson who works in the Metallurgical and Nondestructive Test Section, Quality Control Division Maintenance, is the only certified woman radiographer in Air Force Logistics Command. She not only operates the y equipment, complicated but she is also trained in the use of Iridium 192 radioisotope for radiographic inspection, making her one of the two people at Hill AFB who is licensed by the Atomic Energy Commission to use the radioactive source. She has a thorough knowledge of all safety operating and emergency instructions as a preventive against danger to herself and other personnel. Detects Defects Radiography is one of the nondestructive inspection processes used for detecting subsurface defects in metals and other weapons systems materials. By not damaging the serviceability of the item, this type of inspection keeps maintenance costs down. withstand stress and vibration, any component in a structure must be free of defects. The components in current weapons systems are intricate, being made of a wide variety of engineering materials. These require periodic reliability Inspection radiography carries grave responsibilities. The decisions and recommendations she gives have an important impact on the reliability of a variety of weapons systems and the safety of the men operating them. Radiographs are taken not only in the laboratory but also in the field, in support of worldwide projects on Ogden AMA prime items. Mrs. Johnson talked of some of the more exciting projects she has worked on : "There was the examination of fuse assemblies of the M219 grenade to find out if the firing mechanism was in an "arm" or "safe" position then the inspection of welds in the main body sections of missiles and also the identification of the cause of failure of hydraulic brake valves. damage. She moved up through various positions, such as instrument repairer, tool and gage specialist and industrial radiographer, to her present responsible and almost unique job. She has had many hours of specialized training: courses in atomic defense monitoring and decontamination at Treasure Island, and radiographic interpretation at Chanute AFB, 111. She has received many letters of appreciation and commendation from local military and civilian organizations, and from other Air Force bases where her inspection assistance has been of value. Along with this technical career, Mrs. Johnson has developed many artistic home decorating hobbies to occupy her leisure. Most of all, though, she enjoys camping and fishing with her husband, Ralph, and other members of her family. They have two sons, Brad, who lives in Brigham City, and Ronald, who just returned from his tour in Army service.
