Show Editorials . . . CHAPLAIN'S CORNER Bachelor Airmen Learn to Conquer Your Anxieties Not too many GIs speak French, but many of them Spring Can Be Dangerous With the advent of warm, balmy weather comes the desire to go where the action is. The open road beckons. Spring fever is on the march. The U.S.A., with its beautiful mountains, beaches and super highways, becomes a tourist haven. Going to far-oplaces to watch the advent of Spring has become traditional. Millions of people crowd the highways, open the car windows, and breathe in the new warm air. Many of the trips are short ones; others go the length of the country. Unhappily, not all springtime tourists return home safely. Some will be involved in an accident. A sober fact, but true. Many circumstances can contribute to a traffic accident, but improper driving can be blamed for nearly every case, according to the National Safety Council. Most often, speeding is the cause of fatal accidents. In other accidents it is failure to yield the right of way. A third major error, particularly on rural roads, is driving left of center. These three factors, along with drinking while of all fatal driving, contribute to nearly accidents and to half of the injury accidents. There is no substitute for defensive driving. Springtime is universally a season of growth, the awakening of nature, the vanguard of pleasant summer days ahead. Drive safely and enjoy it. ff three-fourt- Risk Costs hs know how to say, "See you later." If my high school French doesn't fail me, that's the meaning of "Au Revoir." not too many Probably younger airmen and WAFs ever come right out with this Au Revoir bit, but it is quite evident they use the expression. One of the best places to check this out is at chapel on Sundays. Not that there are a bunch of GIs and G gals gathered there singing, "Au Revoir" to God. The trouble is they aren't singing much of anything. As a matter of fact, they aren't even there. In any great numbers, that is. Not Overcrowded And the local civilian churches aren't exactly overcrowded with the younger set, either. So if they are doing any great amount of public praying, they are keeping it pretty quiet. From what one can gather, this isn't too different from what goes on at colleges, or wherever young people of that age group are found in any great numbers. And it isn't something new in recent years. Many active, loyal, sturdy, types remember that they went through the phase during their teens and late early twenties. See You Later This "See you later, God" no-chur- ch attitude often goes with the years of experimentation and rebellion that mark the feelings are High Is the risk involved worth it? Will the triumph of getting that extra "bottle of spirits" through foreign customs outweigh conviction by a foreign civil court? Will the effects produced by a few puffs from a reefer sustain the letdown on a narcotics possession charge? Will the prestige of having colored television offset the penalty of an indebtedness complaint if payment cannot be made on an installment contract? Several legitimate complaints can lay the basis for separation on the basis of financial irresponsibility or dishonorable failure to pay just debts. Will the visit to a "gay" bar based on curiosity lead to association with an element that could cause irreparable harm? Habitual association with persons known to be homosexuals may be cause for separation action. Some individuals may welcome an opportunity for involuntary separation, but is the shortcut to an "early out" the right solution to a temporary problem? "I want out no matter what" decisions made in moments of anger or frustration are regretted by many for a long time. The Air Force Discharge Review Board has had many requests to change the type of separation from individuals in this category; however, relief has been granted only in rare cases. The discharge certificate is testimony to the quality of service performed during a period of military service. It is a permanent record and one which the Air Force will be happy to honor in extending an invitation to "stay with us." It will be of equal importance in your plans; i.e., applying for employment, purchase of home, attendance at school and other benefits to which you may be entitled by virtue of your status as a veteran. When you leave the Air Force, break clean and with a head start you will be glad you did. -- post-servi- ce of many well balanced young people. It's too bad, of course, that they also feel rebellious against God, but that's the way it often seems to work. Some years later when life has taught a few of its sterner lessons, we learn that we can't be too off-hand- ed Comment s about God By Chaplain (Major) Verlin E. The threat or danVr is not usually identified. What are you afraid of? This is one question What arP anxious about? What is it that is haunting you days and you nights and each waking hour? This is another question. There is a way your abnormal fears can be abolished The way is described in the pages of the Holy Bible. "God has not given us the spirit of fear, but he has given us the spirit of power, of love and a sound mind." (II Timothy 1:7) "God's love has been revealed to us in this way: God sent His only Son into the world to give us life through H im. This love consists not in our having loved God, but in His loving us and sending His Son as an atoning sacri- tice tor our sins. If God so loved us, we ought to love one another in like manner. No one has seen God, yet if we love one another, God actually lives within us and His love grows in us toward perfection. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God lives in Him and He lives in God. There is no fear (anxiety) in love. Perfect love cast out fear (anxiety) . One who fears is tormented and no one who feels fear has attained perfect love." nS -- -j A " (I John 111 4:9-1- J 9) The only way I know that one can overcome abnormal fear is through a sound, firm religious faith in God. The only known cure for abnormal fear is faith. There is only one way that negative thoughts can be driven from the mind and that is by the substitution of a powerful positive thought, described as the explusive power of a new affection. A creative, dynamic, spiritual force, such as faith in God, possesses the power to expel the destructive emotions preying upon the mind and soul. This means of God's Grace can be appropriated by every-on- e when they accept Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. This process of developing great spiritual power is caUed "conversion." A powerful pattern of thought called iaiw enters the mind and drives off the poison of fear. onf-y Simply yield your life to tne power oi uou, navm ficient faith that what you cannot do for yourself, God can do for you. ... ..... . - 1 and religion.
