Show ElLL TOP TIMES TITAN II , 700 MILE MOVE Transferring 4,000 Separate Line If ems Rrsi Job for Production Management Branch The Titan Production Manage ment Branch, headed by Herbert E. Beaty, is comprised of two sections: Systems Support Section under Glenn Steffen, and the Item Management Section under Mike Lowery. Though small in number of personnel assigned, the branch performs many essential management functions. All assigned personnel have extensive backgrounds in supply, maintenance, and workload areas. Functions managed by this branch include both organic and contract master repair schedule (MRS), an engine changeoverhaul program, "LOW EBB", which is a classified project, depot storage and repair of Titan II missiles, depot level maintenance support to using com mands, and home support for all update programs, as well as an off-baSpecialized Repair Activity (SRA) at Newark Air Force Station, N.J., for repair of guidance components. se Wre flytg The first priority job tackled by this branch when it was organized in July, 1965, was the monumental task of moving the entire Titan II SRA from San Bernardino AM A to Ogden AM A. This move required the co ordinated transfer of approxi- mately 4,000 separate line items of depot equipment over a dis tance of 700 miles. Recognizing that the physical movement of the SRA would stop production of required service able assets for a period of time, repairable items were rigidly controlled, inserted into expedited repair pipelines, and stockpiled for issue during the "blackout period" of San Bernardino AMA phasedown and transfer. Contractural SRAs were obtained on other selected short supply items during this period to enable MRS support on an "as usual" basis. The success of these endeavors has been, proven by the excep tionally low NORS (not operationally ready, supply) rate enjoyed by the Titan. The Titan engine overhaul pro gram originally established at a contractor's facility has had costs reduced by a quarter ot a million dollars through a recom mended inspection procedure and repair of unmodified fuel and oxidizer pressure sequencing valves that were excess from BSD activities. This branch fur ther reduced the engine overhaul costs by curtailing the total number of 100 per cent replacement items. In addition, a $70,000 saving has been realized by using the declared excess from engine pro duction. Currently, $135,000 assets are additional of worth AFLC 1966 The under review. This was accomplished by studying the complete and com prehensive quality and quantity status of all accelerometers, in service in modifi in repair cation in serviceable storage, and thus reviewing the actual down-lin- e failures against the time. The number of accelerometers to be modified during FY66 was reduced by 75 units, and resulted in a cost reduction of $397,550. Modification of the Titan fuel tank flange has been simplified by establishing group incorporation and eliminating dual and effort. Modifica compounded tions were originally incorporated at time of scheduled engine modification turn-aroun- d removal which required the mis sile to be transported to tne . depot.
