They are men who are undergoing training which qualifies them to wear and operate a complicated suit called a "Rocket Fuel Handlers Clothing Outfit." The suit must be worn when working around Titan II missile propellants or entering a Titan II silo. It is made of a rubber-coate- d material and includes a unit which provides, breathing and ventilating air. The men taking the training are from Service Engineering Division, Titan SSM Division and 2705th Airmuni-tion- s Wing. In order to save the expense of having the men go on temporary duty (TDY) for the training, a special training course was established at Hill AFB. The course was set up by the that r A M aiare JL aims to be a team effort, according to Management Clara Murphree, Training and Development, Personnel and Branch, Civilian Personnel Office. The classes are three days in length. Two instructors from Air Training Command, Chanute AFB, 111., are teaching the classes. They are TSgt. Robert II. Tompkins and SSgt. George Campbell. The unique outfit is referred to as a "SCAPE suit", which stands for self-contain- atmos- ed pheric protective ensemble. The training involves the construction, use, operation, inspection and fitting of the SCAPE suit, helmet, gloves, boots, and undergarments. In addition, students must learn about the Environmental Control Unit and the Chemox unit, in addition to understanding equipment hazards and personal safety while wearing the suit. Getting the class set up proved Personnel Management Branch. The Titan SSM Division fur nished technical assistance, liquid air, portable liquid storage tanks, and environment control units. Maintenance furnished SCAPE suits and prepared the purchase request for the liquid air. Supply obtained the liquid air, which was purchased by Procurement. AFB loaned the air liquid portable storage tank and an environmental control unit. The 945th Troop Carrier Group (reserve) came through with the loan of their conference room Davis-Month- an where the training is conducted. ATC furnished the instructors and other equipment.
