Washington, called the "father of his country", truly earned the title. From the time George Washington was a boy he loved his country deeply. He loved its mountains and rivers and plains. He loved the customs and ways of the people who lived in his country, Most of all, Washington loved the spirit of liberty and freedom which grew among his countrymen and which they fought to uphold, Washington held three positions which were most important to all the people of his country. First he served as the commander in chief of the first American Army, then he served as president of the constitutional convention that gathered in Philadelphia in 1789 to make laws to guide the colonists to form a nation; and then he served as the first president of the United States. Truly a great leader of men, Washington has earned the tribute: "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." AFI . This vear. it so hannens. nhservanop. of Brotherhood Week is next week, Feb.-But in setting aside this "week" the understanding is clear; there are 51 other just as important weeks in which the practice and principles of brotherhood need to be observed. What, then, can we look for in Brotherhood Week? It is really a time when we should focus our attention on the rights and responsibilities of the individual in what we frequently call "the American way of life." II is a time to our conscience and see if we practice the way of brotherhood during the rest of the year. Do we treat people as individuals, instead of generalizing about a group? Do we try to know or understand people of different religious, racial or national backgrounds? President Eisenhower is the honorary chairman of Brotherhood Week, an annual observance sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The list of high civilian and military leaders who endorse this observance is long. However, the real backing for Brotherhood Week comes from all people who endorse it by action not inaction.
