Team Named Champs Mter Elimination Thriller P ATS MATS, a combination team from the 1906th AACS Squadron, Detachment 17, and 4th Weather Group, was crowned surprise champions of the 1958-5- 9 Hill AFB basketball tourney at the base gym last week. The Sore Thumbs were all thumbs and the Gay Gals won first place, first half. Bowlfng so far in the second upsets. The Gay Gals are playing' second fiddle to the Five Sleepers while the Sore Thumbs find themselves in 5th place. It looks like anything can happen. In their third game the overconfident Hornets were tripped by, one of Salt Lake City's best teams the Bettilyons, The game was a real thriller with the score tied 9 at the three-quartmark. It was not until the final few seconds when two foul-sho- ts by the Bettilyon3 wrapped it up. Lt. D. Germann garnered 19 points, but Anderson of. the Bettilyons proved too much with his 24 counters. The fourth game saw the Hornet bounce knock off first-plac- e Troc in an Independent Basketball League contest 1st Lt. D. Lewis made 18 and 2nd Lt. Cooley 15 for the Hornets. Tom-linslooped a terrific 28 points for the losing Troc team. 55-5- 3. 39-3- er MATS gained its title in four hard fought games, one against ceded 4677th Radar Evaluation Squadron and two over 2791st USAF Hospital. In the MATS-4677t- h RES game, MATS the injury ridden but previously undefeated overtime radar men in a 36-3-8 game. A2C Thayne Calderwood tossed 13 points and A2C James Czepa 11 for the winners. MATS then took on 2791st Hospital, winners over 25th Ammunition Supply Squadron. Second Lt. Keith R. Cooley, pivot-maflipped 20 points and teammate Czepa, 15. First Lt. D. B. Germann and AB Otis Kidd racked up 16 and 10 for the stunned medics. Final score, MATS 48, Hospital 43. Final game of the tourney was considered the finest exhibition of intramural basketball at Hill this d season. The MATS five were but eked out 7 over a tired, outfought hospital team. Lt.
