In addition to the brooms, the tractor packs a powerful electro-magnwhich snaps metal objects from the concrete. The usual haul will find a weird collection of nuts and bolts, screws and washers, aircraft "safety" wire, bottle caps, mechanics' tools, etc. Tractor drivers have just one complaint about the operation of the big magnet; it's too powerful! Operators must keep an eye peeled lor metal manhole covers and keep well away from them or they find the heavy covers smashing onto the magnet. Following the tractor, the street sweeper digests the material swept up by the brooms. Jets Increasing With rapidly increasing numbers of jets using Hill facilities, the battle against the foreign objects has taken on renewed importance. Personnel frequently in the airdrome area are urged to give the sweepers a hand and pick up anything seen on the pavement. Aircraft . pilots irjjike a habit of reporting gravel or stones on the runways and taxi strips. For once, getting everybody into the act is the idea. Air Force officials stress the foreign object campaign for two very important reasons: first, to reduce the staggering cost and second, to keep aircraft vital to the nation's defense on the job. et .
