A repair line was set up in the engine repair section, where thousands of reciprocating engines have been overhauled, and mechanics were trained in the technicalities of jet repair. Several of the jets received overhaul and :. were awaiting, final test. Jets Required Special Testing But the engines couldn't be tested in the regular test cells at Hill AFB where conventional aircraft A gay Christmas dance with hundreds of dollars worth of prizes engines had been run up for the will be staged for all Hillfielders on December 19 sponsored by the last 10 years. Located In Remote Spot So the jet engine testing facilities were located in the southeast corner of the field in a spot chosen by engineers where the sound could be kept to a minimum. Also, because of the noise, soundproof control houses are located near the test stand to protect personnel making the tests. Lines run from the engine to the soundproofed shacks so personnel in the shacks can test the workings of the engine. A steel barrier has been built about 50 feet behind the jet test stand to reflect the blast coming out of the jets during testing," North said. "If we didn't have that 'jet wall' back there we'd dig another Grand Canyon," he mused. Don't Require Lengthy Check engines are only run for about 45 minutes or just long enough for technicians to check everything over while regular aircraft engines, or engines, require about 5 hours run up. "With facilities now ready for repair and testing of the most modern jet aircraft engines, it is now possible for Hill AFB to hold its own with other aircraft repair bases the world over," North said.. Jet 00 Broadcast Will Dramatize First Supersonic Hop The 50th anniversary of powered flight will be celebrated on KSL Radio and CBS Radio Sunday, December C when "Hallmark .Hall of Fame" presents a dramatization of the first supersonic flight, "Major Charles Yeager Faster Than Sound". The broadcast will be heard over KSL Radio at 7 p.m. On the program will be Major Yeager himself, who will tell in his own words what it felt like when he broke the sound barrier for the first time in history. The program is being, produced and broadcast with the full cooperation and approval of the United States Air Force, and actual sound recordings of a ship in flight at speeds faster than sound were supplied by the Air Force for use on the program. Lionel Barrymore, host of "Hallmark Hall of Fame", will introduce Major Yeager and set the scene for the dramatization that follows. Request for Funds from CWA for Parties Must Be in By December 31 The regularly scheduled business meeting for December of the Administrative, club will be in the base theatre Wednesday December 16, according to Hill held Harrington, club president. purpose of the December meeting will be to amend the present constitution. Robert The l ' All requests for funds from the Civilian Welfare Association for office parties at Hill AFB must be in before the end of the year, according to L. H. Florence, custodian of the fund. Last August the civilian welfare association announced that they would help finance office parties in the amount of 35 cents per person. Since that time many organizations have requested and received funds for their parties. However, there are still some organizations who have not asked for their allotted 35 cents per head.
