Many of these now have left for other assignments, but a goodly number still remain after having served with distinction at Hill Field and elsewhere throughout the war. Some of these who are still stationed here, and others hold- -. jng key positions on the field, are paid deserved tribute here with brief sketches of their d. lives and services to this com-man- COL. C. C. MINTY COL. C. C. MINTY, deputy, who has served in that capacity under three commanding officers since since July, 1942, came here fit the request of Brig. Gen. ' (then Col.) Morris Berman, commanding officer at OATSC. He played a major role in setting up mechanic learner programs in Utah, Idaho, California, Washington and Oregon for the Sacramento, San Bernardino and Spokane ATSC instal- lations, as well as that at Hill " - Field. Col. Minty, as director of training, supervised the work done by W. E. Dewey, civilian chief, and others in cooperating with the Utah State Depart- ment of education and the U. S. office of education on developing a course of study pattern. . This work was so well done that it was adopted, with some modifications, by ATSC headquarters for use throughout the command. At that time, during the be- (inning months of the war, a kupply of skilled mechanics was . throughout the West and Northwest. Col. Minty held a Navy pilot's rating in World War I, leaving at the end of the war to complete his college education. From 1926 until coming here as. a civilian on June 19, 1941, he was engaged in teacheducational administraing and tion ' in the Minneapolis public schools. He reported for duty at Hill Field on Sept. 18, 1941, as a major. He is married and both his wife and daughter, Janet, have held positions on the field during periods of shortage of personnel. His brother, Col R. J. Minty, now stationed at Wright Field, as the first chief of maintenance division at Hill Field. COL. FERNANDO GREEN COL. FERNANDO GREEN, deputy for personnel (T-l- ), is a comparatively recent arrival at Hill Field, but an with the Army. Mrs. Green did not accompany her husband to Utah and is living in their home in Oklahoma City, Okla. COL. WALLACE H. WILLIAMS COL. WALLACE H. WILLIAMS, deputy commander, ), is another recent addiht tion to the officers at Hill Field, coming here as chief of maintenance in May, 1945. He three years and two spent months in Europe prior to that, the first as AAF liaison engineering officer with the Royal Air Force and the remainder of the time as chief of maintenance in the Eighth Air Force Service Command. He has served 28 years with the Air Corps, joining up in June, 1918, as a private and serving through all the ranks until given a commission. Among his assignments were two in Hawaii where he served a total of seven years. He holds an aircraft observer's rating at the present time. Col. Williams was awarded the Legion of Merit while in Europe. His ETO ribbon contains three bronze stars awarded him for his service in that area. He has two sons, one a lieutenant in the air corps and stationed in Guam, and the other a corporal in the same branch of the service, serv ing in the Philippine Islands at xne present time. Col. and Mrs. Williams are originally, from San Antnnin Texas, but art living on the field (T-3- top-flig- ft with their daughter, Marguerite, while he is stationed here. COL. WILLIAM H. SHIELDS COL. WILLIAM H. SHIELDS, came to deputy for supply (T-4- ), Hill Field in the dark days of early 1942. He has been here ever since, serving in supply division throughout the war. He is a veteran of World War I, having served in that war in the 45th Infantry (regular) after enlisting on June 22, 1917. - On June 1, 1918, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry and assigned as a machine-gu- n instructor for the remainder of that war. He resigned his commission on Nov. 20, 1918, and spent much of his time for the next 24 years with the National Park Service in developing state parks in West Virginia. He was recommissioned in the reserves on May 10, 1921, however, and served a tour of duty with the CCC as a captain from 1935 to. 1937. Again called to active duty as a major on Jan. 21, 1942, he was assigned to Hill Field as assistant chief of supply division. He became chief oi the division on July 1, 1944, and assumed his present duties when the T organization went into effect. Col. Shields, who was born near Toledo, Ohio, is married and has one son, William H. Shields II, now a major In the Air Corps. One of his four daughters is married fo a first lieutenant in the Air Corps, while the other three are living with their parents in Ogden. COL. FRANKLIN S. HENLEY COL. FRANKLIN S. HENLEY, deputy for plans (T-- 5) has been at Hill Field less than 3 months, but holds a position of no little responsibility. He came here on Oct. 10, 1945, after serving with the Air Forces in England and France. He is a West Point graduate, having been appointed to the academy while serving as an enlisted man in the Army.
