The death rate for the year. 9.1 per 1,000 population in the United States, is close to the 1954 figure, the lowest on record. This marks the eighth successive year for which the death rate for the country has been below 10 per 1,000 population. In 1945, only one decade ago, the death rate was 10.S per 1,000 population, one-sixabove the level for 1955. A notable feature of the 1955 record is another substantial reduction in mortality from tuberculosis. For the first time the death rate from this disease is somewhat less than 10 per 100,000 of the population. This represents a h decline of about from the previous year. Just one decade aea. in 1945. tha tubercu- losis death rate was almost four klmes the 1955 level. Mortality from influenza and 'pneumonia continued at a low lev- l in 1955. th GET A HORSE Riders in New York City's Central Park giv the horse laugh to the driver of a utility 7 Named the "Star," the tiny vehicle has a streamlined body ok German J.L.O. engine.
