So said Neil Frischknecht of the experi- - 4i v J. B ' w ment station to a group of Juab County stockmen last Tuesday. Lawrence Brough and Lorenzo Mangelson of Levan, and Smith Ingram of Nephi, East Juab county farmers, and Ray Anderson and Walt Ruimsey of the Soil Conservation Service, accompanied the five miles group to Benmore, south of Vernon, to study the management of the 2400 acres of grass. The secret of these heavy gains, which is the average for the past four years, is proper use. Proper use means taking 60 to 65 per cent of the current years growth of grass. This degree of use is such that the plants are able to maintain their health and produce a maximum amount of feed year after year. In contrast, these studies show that heavy use (85 per cent of the yearly growth) resulted in lower daily gains, lower forage production, and rapid invasion by sage brush and halogeton. The studies have been in progress for nine years on these pastures which were seeded by the Soil Conservation Service around 1940. Rainfall in the area is about 10 or 11 inches per year. The grazing season runs from the middle of April to middle to June. Mr. Frischknech said that it requires about 2.4 acres of well crested wheat grass to suppor a cow Tor one month on this pasture. The group agreed that this was quite an improvement over the ajoining unseeded range which requires around 15 acres per cow per month man-manag- NEPHI DRUG CO. Has a good sound, doesn't it? Better still, it's true! You'll be able to claim a refund of 2 cents per gallon of gas used for farming on your farm from January 1, 1956 to July 1, 1956. Claims are to be filed with the Bureau of Internal Revenue between June 30 and October 1 of this year. How to Get It 1. Determine the number of gallons of gas bought since Jan. 1 for use on the farm. Some of you will merely to add the gallons used as recorded in your farm account book. (Let's hope you recorded the amount as well as the cost.) If you use our new Utah Farm Family Account Book you'll probably have this data since we provide a column to enter this data. Others will have to search for delivery receipts, paid bills, cancelled checks, or perhaps an obliging supplier who will dig back through his accounts to get this information for you. 2. Determine the amount of gas used on the farm for farming purposes. Gas used in vehicles on public roads county, state or federal is not eligible for this refund. Since most of our farms are scattered and since we must travel public roads to do our farming and since many farmers have bulk delivery and pump gas into cars and trucks as well as tractors, some estimate must be made of the amount of gas actually used on the farm for farming purposes. This will Include gas which you used on your farm and gas which a custom operator used on your farm doing custom work. Since, any of us may be called upon to explain or justify the fig- - ures in our claim we must have good reasons or explanations for these items. To arrive at the amounts used on the farm where some of the amount purchased is used on county or state roads, you'll need to divide your gas between highway and farm use. In doing this, adopt some method which is 'reasonable and which you can justify. Such information as hours of use, consumption per hour, miles travelled and amount used in this travel, etc. will help you arrive at the figures for your farm. Keep the figures you use to make this division; they may be questioned and therefore needed by you later to explain your claim. We have figures available at our office on the hours required to do a certain piece of farm work which may be helpful in computing the number of gallons used. These forms will be sent to each farmer soon through the courtesy of the Juaib County Farm Bureau. They may be obtained also either at the Bank or the County Agent's office. Don't Miss These Evaporation: Don't forget evaloss. Distributors estimate that one half of one per cent of the volume of gas on hand evaporates every 30 days. These estimates are for bulk storage facilities that are buried underground or are in overhead silver painted storage tanks. Trucks: Some trucks travel the public roads very little in doing farm work. Examples are trucks used to water turkeys or pull camp on a sheep outfit, or feed cattle. Gas for these uses while not on public roads is eligible for poration refund. DEPARTUNITED STATES MENT OF THE INTERIOR, Bureau of Land Management, Land Office Salt Lake City, Utah.
