RAY BURTENSHAW t V- - Juab County Agricultural Agent Wheat Acreages to be Mona Students Tell In Line by Jun 25 of Conservation Farmers with a 1956 wheat acreage in excess of their farm wheat allotments may take action until June 25 to adjust their wheat acreage into compliance, according to J. Walter Paxman, chair man of the Juab Agricultural tabilization and Conservation committee. Wheat acreage in excess of the farm allotment may be plowed under as green manure, pastured, or cut for hay. Any of these methods used to reduce the wheat acreage must toe carried out in such a way that the wheat will not reach maturity. Farmers with allotments of less than 15 acres who now have more than 15 acres of wheat may use the same methods to reduce their wheat acreage to avoid a marketing quota penalty. Mr. Paxman reminds wheat growers that a farm with a wheat allotment of 15 acres or less may produce as much as 15 acres of wheat without being subject to marketing quota penalties. However, if such farms produce more than 15 acres of wheat, the marketing quota penalty is calculated on the difference between the allotment and the actual acreage harvested. The marketing quota penalty is 45 per cent of the parity price. The white man thought there were so many trees they, could burn or cut all they wanted to clear land for farming. They plowed up grasslands to plant wheat and other crops. This destroyed many animals and the homes of many more animals and birds. The mountains have been overgrazed so that water washes off the top soil instead of soaking into the ground. It is up to us to learn about conservation and save the natural resources of our country. CONSERVATION OF WATER By Thomas Young Water is one of our most important resources. There is not enough water in the western part of our country, so we have to learn to use it wisely. When water is used right it is a friend. When it is not used right, It is harmful. We need good clean water to drink and to keep our homes and clothes clean. Water is used to make electricity, and steam power to run lights, machines and ships. Another important use is for irrigation. In our western states we depend upon irrigation for our farms. If the trees in the forests are cut and the grass all eaten off there is nothing to stop floods from coming down and doing great harm to the farms by washing away the top soil. Much can be done to save water. Reservoirs, ponds, strong dams and deep ditches can save water while not in use, and then by having big- UTAH Ke need some kinds of imals. animals because they help protect plants. Insects destroyed more trees than forest fires do and they damage many plants that provide us with food and clothing. Birds eat billions of these insects each year. Frogs, toads and fish also eat insects. Snakes and skunks eat many of these insects, and they also eat mice and rats. We build bird sanctuaries and have game laws to protect birds. Today you can see millions of ducks and geese if you visit a bird refuge in the fall, but at whatever time of year you go there you can see a great many birds. One bird refuge is fifteen miles west of Brigham City, Utah. It was started in 1928 to protect birds, to feed them, and study their diseases and habits. You also can't hurt them, About every state has a place to save birds and other kinds of animals. In each state government theer is a department whose duty it is to protect wild life. They suggest the game laws and issue hunting fish licenses. They supervise hatcheries and planting of fish and look out for the welfare of animals in the state.
