In checking the fruit during field visits that day, it was found that the apricots have been damaged severely by frosts of last winter to the extent that a very light crop can be expected. The peaches, cherries and other more hardy fruit appears to be alright to date. There will be a good crop if severe weather later In the spring doesn't interfere. "Pruning of trees should be completed in the next two weeks" Mr. Call stated. "Most of the peach trees should be sprayed in the pink bud stage for twig borer." Directions for treating for insect control, chlorosis, and other fruit problems may be had by obtaining the official 1956 fruit insect control bulletin from the County Agent's office in the basement of the federal building. Will) ALFALFA WEEVILS -- Perhaps it is because there are no difficulties in getting a crop of manure, that farmers often neglect its value. No one would willingly pour half a wheat crop into the ocean. Yet it is estimated that farmers loose half the nation's mauure crop through careless handling. Here is how we lose the manure dollar. The nitrogen goes into ammonia the air as . gas, or the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is washed away with rain water or the liquid portion drains into the ground. A ton of manure is worth $5 to $10 depending upon the way it is handled. Forty per cent of the nitrogen, 60 per cent of the potash and six per cent of the prosphate in manure are contained in the liquid portion. We can conserve these valuable plant foods with plenty of bedding, concrete floors or pits, and handling in a water tight manure spreader. To get the most out of the easily lost liquid manure farmers in this county are resorting more and more to a practice followed for years in thrifty European countthat or storing and handries ling liquid manure. Poultry manure is concentrated plant food. It contains two to three times as much potassium as So it does fresh cow manure. must be used sparingly and not applied as heavily as other manures. One ton of fresh cow man ure contains 500 lbs or organic matter. 10 libs of nitrogen, 5 lbs of phosphorus acid and 10 lbs of potash. eye-singi- ng Simple, but efficient.
