Livestock Industry Minerals are important and necBut essary in livestock ration. they are useful only when properly used and fed, according to Don Thomas, extension veterinar ian, who explained this at meetings held recently in East Juab 2.69 ...... 19c 16 oz packages, Each County. Too much iron in cattle rations is causing heavy losses. This is causing no end of trouble, stated County Agent Ray Burtenshaw. One farmer reported 10 dairy animals operated on for "hardware disease" in one year. Cases of trouble from iron-wirnails, scrap iron, cans, saw blades, staples and what have you, are numerous and costly. Much of the work of veterinarians is the treating of "hardware disease." Field choppers and balers of feed pick up pieces of metal that have become scattered in fields and mix them with the feed. Accidental This means trouble. losses are plentiful. Farmers can cut losses greatly, according to County Agent Burtenshaw, if they: 1. Place all scraps of metal in a suitable container instead of throwing it in the corral or field. 2. Control all bailing wire. Sometimes pieces of wire are clipped in the field by the mower or bailer. Small pieces are then swallowed by cattle, puncture the digestive tract and may cause death. 3. Each spring and fall have a clean-u- p of the fields, lots, cor- -' rals, breeding and grazing areas. 4. Make certain that ground or chopped feed has passed over a magnet to remove pieces of scraps of metal. It's surprising what a magnet can find in ground feed.
