From Nature's Book First-Secon- Holiday Season In Ecuador Explained ht It took man unWASHINGTON til the 20th century to develop air conditioning, something nature's engineers thought of many years before. The industrious honeybee has for more than 40 centuries regulated the hive's temperature. In summer well - organized fanner bees flutter about tirelessly, circulating air which maintains a pleasant atmosphere for brooding bees and removes excess moisture that would ferment the nectar. Bees construct elaborate homes that suggest modern apartment hotels. The hive is honeycombed with thousands of nursery cells, each a sort of efficiency apartment where a single egg hatches and the larva grows to maturity. When a worker emerges, the worker bee "staff" thoroughly cleans the cell to prepare for the next tenant. Like bees, ants and termites are master builders. Worker ants venture out each day to cut pieces of leaves that are borne home like unbrellas. Masticated, the leaves serve not as food but as beds for fungus the ants grow to eat. TIMES-NEW- -- (Editor's Note: This is another in the series of articles by Far-re- ll Wankier Jr., concerning life in Ecuador where he is spending several months as a Foreign ExStudent. This articile change concerns the holiday season in this South American country:) Farrell Wankier Jr. After arriving home at 7:00 The main part of their holiday season comes after the first of January. Through tradition they have brought forth the wearing of many different costumes the first week, because of the order King Herod made right after the birth of the Christ child, to kill all baby boys under two years of age. Then on the fifth of January, they commemorate with more festivals, Three Kings Day. The sixth is the conclusion of the festive holiday season being probably the most, important to them, because it is their Three Wise Men day. I mentioned earlier about not arriving home until 7:00 a. m. This or later, is the customary hour for coming home after a big Eucadorian party. With the parties not getting underway until 11:00 or 12:00 o'clock, and the banquet after that, it would be quite impolite to leave before 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning. So if you're not used to it, you come dragging home, either in your tux or costume, dead tired after about seven hours of dancing. You may wonder why the costume tux arrangement. Its because here for the first week in January, all parties are formal, but because of the traditional costume wearing in that week of January, it is recognized as very By a. m. today, my deadened body and nerves were inspired to write this brief description of my first holiday season in Ecuador. The holiday sesaon is quite different here thaYi in the states. In the states you find the traditional Christmas, Christmas eve and New Years eve parties and that's about the size of it, except maybe for a few friendly visits, etc. Here in Ecuador the season begins about December 20 and continues until the 6th of January with one big festive time. It seems that they don't take turns, from year to year, in giving parties, but everybody gives a party during the season. This all tends to make it a lively period. Until the last few years, with the North American influence, the Christmas week hasn't been of too much importance. But instead, the main importance is placed on the first week in January. In recent years, though, Christmas here is much the same as ours in the states with the exchange of many guts ana other tokens of remembrance. But the giving does not conclude on the 25th of December, but instead it is quite proper in their culture to continue the gift giving up until the 6th of January. This custom makes it quite convenient to return a gift to someone who had unexpectedly presented you with a token of remembrance. Because of the country being almost entirely Catholic dominated, everyone attends their traditional midnight mass. This large roster mass comes on Christmas eve in all their many large beautiful old churches being crammed full of ' Of the 12 most important industrial developments of the past 15 years, only one nylon is sased on fundamental 20th CenSo says tury investigation. She said the creeds and theology were "men's attempts to describe, that experience." Mrs. Knight contended that the revealed decline of church-goinin statistics proved a decline in belief. Mrs. Jenny Morton, 52, wife of a minister, made her appearance 1956 proper to wear a costume to a formal dress party. The holiday seson here as a whole is one of many many fiestas in which a social butterfly or a professional party boy would become quite worn out and exausted with the many happy times based around the birth of Jesus Christ. Shall we ever be aware of the true meaning of Christmas, that of the birth of the Christ Child. Let's not let this spirit slip out of our grasp and thinking into a spirit of old parties and false gift giving. n, The decline in mortality since the turn of the century has brought better chances of survival to each successive generation of Americans. While the gains have been particularly impressive in early life, substantial progress has also been made at the ages when most men are gainfully employed and when women bear responsibility for the care of a home and children. Our younger generations undoubtedly will have an even more favorable record of survival than persons born before the turn of the century, because death rates have been decreasing since 1900 and are likely to decline still further in the future. 26th, f I II II llll 1 OPEN --8 a. m. to 6 p. m.
