It reproduces from seed and has an extensive, coarse, underground rootstock. As the name implies, it has white flowers and a patch in bloom gives a snowy-whit- e appearance. This weed produces reddish brown seeds which resemble radish seed and are about the ame size as alfalfa seeds, making it difficult to clean from alfalfa or clover. It makes its growth --early in the spring and flowers in May, depending upon the season and altitude. White top was introduced into I United States about 50 years ago and is now extremely widespread. It is a problem In every county in Utah and is considered a serious menace in 24 counties, andis the most serious weed present in many of the counties. It occurs in cultivated fields and in waste places, particularly thriving on somewhat saline soils. White top has been and can ibe controlled by clean cultivation. To be successful, this must be done thoroughly every two or three weeks durin gthe growing ing season and will take two or three years. A more practical method consists of a combination of cropping and chemicals. For example, white top on crop land early in the spring and prepare a good seedbed. This sets the weed back. Apply about 40 pounds of available nitrogen per acre and seed immediately to grain. The rertinaber will help the grain to grow rapdly and provide compet ition to the weed. Spray with 1.5 pounds of 2 per acre when the grain is between the stooling and oootlng stage. After the crop is harvested, plow and cultivate or spray with 2 D as fall growth appears. This program should be 4-- D 4-- followed as long as is necessary. complete control. The A. S. C. committee in con nection with the Juab County Com missioners have worked out a program wherein farmers can ob tain assistance through the A S C program on all noxious weed con trol. There are three svstems: 1. Cultivation alone, 2, cropping and cultivation, and 3, application of cneimicais. In order to qualify for assist ance all spraying must be done under supervision of the county weed supervisor.
