In an article written for the National Geographic Magazine, Ivor says, "Birds have the capacity for more than glimmer of intelligence." Emotions resembling fear, love and Jealousy are evident, he says, and birds have memory, and something akin to a language, Mr. Ivor has worked with bluebirds, doves, thrushes, robins and other native birds for 2 years. Scores of songsters have come to accept him as their foster parent. As a student of wildlife, he was granted special permit by Canadian authorities to confine birds. Many of Mr. Ivor's birds fly free during the day; some being allowed as much as eight months of daytime liberty each year. In the evening all birds are shut in the observatory, To get them Inside, Mr. Ivor merely calls their names. But birds, like small children, don't always respond. Pet, a wilful blue jay, came to roost only when it suited her. Mr. Ivor solved the problem by having Dick, another jay, call Pet. She answered and flew in. From that time, whenever she refused to go in. Mr. Ivor had the male bird page her, and It worked every time. t i i Morley. Mr. and Mrs. T. D.
