Mrs. Nephi Urges Planting Of Smut-Pro- Lucille Lunt returned to Friday after spending her Wheat Varieties heat seeding time is at hand and because of the general smut infestations of both common and dwarf smut this year, farmers are desirious of doing that which will produce the cleanest grain next fall, according to Ray Burtcnshaw Juab County Agricultural agent. Claims have been made that some chemicals were controlling dwarf smut in the northwest. Therefore, Experiment stations of Utah. Idaho, Montana and Washington were contacted to get their findings on dwarf smut control. They reported the only recommendations to date are' to plant clean seed of a resistant variety, and treat with an approved chemical and "lessen" your smut worries by next year." It is interesting to note too, that their recommendations are to lessen, and not do away with smut. Areas of Juab County not previously affected with smut were infested this year which means that varieties not resistant to smut should not be seeded. Che two varieties of hard red winter wheat recommended for Utah are Cache and Wasatch. Because Cache temls to yield somewhat better than Wasatch in this area, most farmers are making efforts to obtain clean Cache seed. Brevor, a feed wheat for fall seeding on irrigated lands, is also reported as resistant to common smut anil showed no infestation of dwarf smut when seeded along side heavily infested turkey red wheat in this county. Dr. C. S. Holton. Pathologist of the College of Washington at Pullman, and the outstanding authority on smut research work lists four chemicals for seed treatment purposes.
