"No discredit reflects upon the brave and experienced Arctic explorers of another day," Colonel Fletcher says. "Men of the Air Force can testify that ice islands closely resemble land, particularly when the viewer is walking around on one on a summer day." Even radar was fooled by these 130 to 200 foot thick masses of fresh-wate- r ice rising distinctly above the surrounding salt ice of the Arctic pack. In fact, the first known ice island, one similar to Fletcher's, was reported as new land by the airborne radar operator who found it. Colonel Fletcher has established that the ice islands broke from a thick glacial shelf, part of an age-ol- d icecap, anchored to the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. Once a piece of shelf breaks off it becomes an island that can drift at the mercy of wind and tide in a clockwise sweep around the western sector of the polar basin. It disintegrates hardly at all in the cold polar seas. Main Street, Nephi, Utah 196; 51 South Phone 1953 17, 1906. Roy E. Gibson - Manager CoL Joseph O. Fletcher.
