Show mm SPEAKING By the Editor Took a few minutes off the other night and took a "peek" at what goes on at the recently opened "Nebo Skateland" at the "South Nephi" location which is becomming quite a business area in itself. Although a few of the boys still bounce when they hit the floor, the big majority of the kids of Nephi and vicinity are fast be coming pretty expert skaters, and are learning to do all the fancy stuff like skating backwards, etc. I stuck around the place long enough to discover one thing Nebo Skateland is a credit to our community, and it's a pretty fine place for the kids to be . . there's no influence which wil "lead them to ruin" unless you call having a darn good time and a lot of good exercise as "leading down the wrong road." Perhaps some of we oldsters ought to join the young sters and take off a few pounds either by exercise or by bumps. We congratulate the Gentlemen Gerhardts for their fine project. Did you ever think about the safety of your own home? Is it really a safe place to leave the kiddies unattended while you go partying? We don't think so . . and here's why: Fires occur at the most unexpected times without any apparent cause, and sleeping kiddies can be killed by smoke or fumes within a matter of minutes. Don't take any chance, especially in this time of the year when you're firing heavier and when a defective flue is apt to give a major fire within a matter of minutes. Take time out today to check your chimneys. Go into your attic and see if you can find any holes where hot sparks might get out. to land in some combustible material to set off a fire. Check your stove pipes. Are they tight and wired or riveted into place so they can't fall down. Is your furnace chimney getting filled with Fly ash in itself is not too dangerous, but if in the pipe there's plenty of chance for an explosion through the furnace door. And how about your electric wiring. Voltage during the night hours is somewhat higher because of lack of use and if you've got a weak spot it may burst at that time. Take time out to check it . . or have an electrician check it . . . and if it's bad, you'd better have it rewired now cause there's liable to be a shortage of electrical wirring before too long. The main thing is . . the best of us are none too careful when it comes to preventative measures and as the old adage "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of in Nephi! tiny in Nephi! ltoost Nephi! MluiUl Volume 42 Nephi, Juab County, Utah, Earth Tremors Boy Scouts Mark Felt Here on Tuesday Many and varied reactions have been told concerning the "earth tremor" which occurred on Tuesday morning at about 6:30 a. m. Two distinct tremors were felt by most people reporting, the first four to five minutes prior to the second and hardest quake. The second quake was recorded at the U S A C at Logan, as 6:34.22 a. m., and no report has been received from the University of Utah as whether it was recorded there. Although the "shake" was hard enough to awaken those still in bed, no damage has been reported I f Thursday, 41st Anniversary SINGLE COPY 10c Committee Named to Outline Plans WHEREAS, February 8, 1951 the 41st anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America, chartered by the Congress of the United States as a program for all the boys is Conciliation meetings will be continued on Tuesday, both Company and Union spoKesmen report- 1 Number 5 PROCLAMATION Meetingsto be Continued of Arrierica, and ed late Thursday. Recommendations for a fitting observation of Nephi 100th birthday are anticipated in the near I'uture from a special committee announced this week by Dr. Preston L. Jones, Mayor of Nephi. Dr. Jones has asked Judge Will L. Hoyt, James H. Ockey and A. ii. Belliston to act as a supervisory committee to select the type o celebration most fitting for the event, to make recommendations as to dates, and as to committees necessary to carry out the big event. Dr. Jones stated early this week that the group will also have the authority to call in others to assist with the planning, if they so desire. The centennial of Nephi's founding will occur in September, and is is a "natural" date for a homecoming and a big observance for the community. As soon as recommendations are made by this group, and approved by city officials, they will be released to the public. Several people of Nephi thought the tremor was result of an atomic bomb being set off near Las Vegas, and Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Gardner report having seen huge lights ascend into the air in a direction almost simultaneously with the quakes.
