Show I ere We in Sit.., An Editorial On Monday evening of this week, a "test" blackout was called for Utah, Idaho, parts of Montana, and parts of the Pacific uorthwest. Were it not for the fact that many of us were tuned to Salt Lake radio stations at the time it was called, we would have known nothing of it until the following day when civilian defense officers of Salt Lake county were given a "gentle spanking" in a Salt Lake City newspaper. If they in Salt Lake City and Ogden, were caught sound asleep, what would we, in East Juab coun ty, be "caught with" should an or der come for a complete blackout? The people of East Juab County, were "luke Nephi particularly, warm" toward civilian defense activities when the call was made early last spring for a complete The writer, with a organization. great many others, attended the first meetings which were called to get the organization completed, but as the program progressed, the interest waned, until it was buried along with many other worth-whil- e activities which have arisen in Nephi, and for the lack of good, solid support on the part of the people generally, died a slow and painful death. The Japs surprised the world on December 7th of last year, a few days over a year ago. They may intermountain America surprise any night, and if they do, are we gojng to be ready to take care of any portion of the eficts of any raid, or are we going to have a beacon light shining from each window to guide their bombadiers. It isn't often that this newspaper takes a stand like this, and calls for action, but it has come to a time when the job of civilian defense is more than a "Let George Do It" job. We must have a list of volunteers ready to help the fire department; air raid wardens must be selected for each block in the town, to insure a complete blackout; extra volunteers must be well trained to act as auxiliary policemen; women must become nurses and men must become repair and salvage crew members. Boys must be trained to be messengers, and the entire population must be well trained on what to do IF AND WHEN the air raid comes.
