I LOS ANGELES June livestock have been somewhat weaker than had been anticipated, with both cattle and lamb prices lower than earlier in the year. Market prices have been below earlier expectations in all parts of the country, though prices are still on a favorable basis to growers and are averaging higher than a year ago. California's grass steer crop is meeting less active demand than earlier in the season, due in part to restricted demand for feeder cattle. The better grades of fed steers have held up fairly well, but grass cows have declined to a lange of $6.75 to $7.50 per 100 lbs. for the bulk. A few of the better grades of grass cows are selling as high as $8.00 to $8.50 per 100 lbs. The fat lamb market has been averaging lower than had been anticipated by growers, prices at this time being more than a cent a pound lower than earlier in the season. On the Los Angeles market, choice fat lambs are considered quotable at $9.75 per 100 lbs. The hog market carries a strong undertone and prices are well Lucky Elephant If you want an elephant mascot which will bring you luck, says an expert in India, you must choose one which has the right tusk higher than the left 1941, Oldest College Newspaper The oldest college newspaper in the United States is the Dartmouth, student daily of Dartmouth college, which began publication in November, 1839. markets a year There ago. Is consid- erable interest in increasing pork production on the Pacific coast, especially in the wheat belt where present prices are encouraging a greater production. Some shifting of corn feeding from cattle to hogs is expected in the middle west due to the relatively high price of feeder cattle and a favorable return on hog feeding, due partly to government support of the market. Drouth conditions in the middle west undoubtedly have been a factor in limiting the demand for stoker and feeder cattle, but the situation is not serious as yet and might be changed with a period of rainfall. It is a good time to carefully watch markets because of unusual factors in the trade. The rank and file of western feeders and producers continue to look for a firm market with ever broadening demand due to the still rapidly expanding defense program, which is providing ever increasing payrolls and adding to consumer buying power.
