The physical frontiers of the nation have been passed. The time when the sslutlcn for all economic ills was to ''Go West, young man. go West" has gone. The advent of unemployment compensation inio thefi social picture opened a new ;ld for the public emplcyr.Krit uHice system. In the future, .he employment office will not be merely a placement agency, but will be a clinic, with the plague of unemployment as one of the objects of study. One of the trends of unemployment compensation will be the stabilization of labor. Stabilization will not be entirely achieved, of course, but many companies, especially the smaller ones which have been operating on a haphazard basis without schedule or plan, will find unemployment compensation an expensive thing. The natural reaction of these companies, as well as all other concerns, will be to lay out their work as far ahead as possible, recruit a crew of good steady men, and keep these men at work. Assuming that many concerns can stabilize to a greater extent than they have already stabil ll J cerned. When medical science begins to ferret out a cure for a plague, the first thing it does is attempt to isolate the germ. Once that germ is Isolated, efforts are made to combat the germ and lind something which will kill the germ but not hurt the human body. A somewhat similar pro cedure will be followed in the employment office. When one group is assured steady employ ment, another group will be faced with more or less steady unemployment. And, just as medical scieuce classifies the causes of disease, so must the employment office scientifically class'fy the reasons for unemployment. One group will be unemployable because of age; another group will be unemployable because of physical handicaps; another will be unemployed because of lack of training; a fourth will be unemployable because of lack of work in their particular field; and yet another section will be unemployed because "There is no work." It will be the duty of the employment office to assemble these facts and to draw a true picture of the amount of unemployment, the classes effected, the number, and the reason. When this picture is drawn, It will be up to the body politic to make the corrections needed. Thus, the chief duty of the employment service will not be to cure the world of its employment troubles, but rather to get the picture clearly and accurately before the citizenry of the ' ftp N ews Miss Emma Anderson of Fount- tian Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.
