However, the L. D. S. pioneers were primarily farmers and stockmen and Major John Wesley I'owell, Civil war veteran and first explorer of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, became the first of Cflanese and the government engineers to call national attention to Zion Conyon. In 1918 the locally unpopular name of Mukuntuweap, Piute name for "straight canyon" was changed to Zion and the area was made a national pary. In anticipation of the assembly of the largest crowd in the history of Utah, Preston P. Patraw, superintendent of Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks, has made arrangements for the parking of the automobiles in the park and the handling of traffic in cooperation with the Utah state highway department and the war department. inA company of the hirty-etgt- h fantry wiil be detailed with the Thirty-eight- h infantry band to the Park for Memorial day. The 400 members of the choir and President Grant and others of the church authorities will leave Salt Lake City the night of May 29 in a special train to reach Cedar City at 5 A. M. May 30. After a breakfast at Cedar City, the members of the choir will be taken in private automobiles to Zion nat tonal pary for the broadcast. The automobile caravan of 125 cars, to be furnished by the Cedar City and St. George chambers of commerce in cooperation with the presidents of the Cedar City, St. George and Zion Park stakes o fthe L. D. S. church will leave Cedar City at 6:30 A. M. to reach the park at 8:30.. The caravan will be escorted by a Utah state highway patrol. After the broadcast at 11 a. m. a box luncheon will be served in Zion to members of the choir and they will be the guests of their 'Dixie' hosts on a trip to St George where a meeting under the direction of President Grant will be held at 4 P. M. on the grounds of the St. George temple. The choir members will be returned to Cedar City in time for dinner on the evning of May 30, and on Monday, May 31, the choir members will visit points of interest near Cedar City and St. George. Aconcert will be given in the new Cedar City school auditorium th evening of Monday, May 31, un der the auspices of the Cedar City senior and junior chambers of commerce. In addition to the concert of popular numbers, soloists will include Emma Lucy Gates Bowen, former Metropolitan opera soprano Frank Asper, semor tabernacle or ganist and Miss Becky Almond, pi anist. The present director of the choir, Mr. Cornwall, is a native of Salt Lake Citq, a graduate of the L. D. S. University, University of Utah and Northwestern university. Prior to his appointment as choir director in 1935, Mr. Cornwall was supervisor of music in the Granite and Salt Lake City school districts. David A. Smith, a mem ber of the presiding bishopric of the church, is president of the choir having served smce 1908. In addition. to world wide fame through concerts in the L. D. S. Tabernacle at Salt Lake City and regular national network broadcasts over the National Broadcasting company and the Columbia Broadcasting system stations, the choir has bee na recognized feature at world expositions, starting with the Chicago World's exposition of layj.
