Smith discussed the new soil conservation program of the government before the members of the Kiwanis club Monday, displaying a number of charts and graphs to show (he advantages of the program for soil conservation and the values to the farmers. Mr. Smith, in commenting on the AAA program, which was declared unconstitutional by the U. S. supreme court, stated that local farmers had received some splendid benefits from tills program. He said that an average of $52,-0was paid to local farmers over a three-yeperiod and that most of this money had been paid on taxes ond mortgages. He stated that the new program would not bring as much money to the farmers, but would be extremely valuable in conserving and building up the soil. Crops would gradually toil in favor of those that build it up. e cut down that draw from the He stated that during the year acres of land was 1934, 13,000 abanodned because the farmers could not afford to grow crops on them while the average had been only 5,000. uounty Agent smith reviewed a number of experiments showing the destruction to soils from irrigation and various types or crops. He told of one plot or ground where an experiment was carried on by Dierctor William Peterson of the U. S. A C, wherein 7555 tons of top soil was washed from that and by irrigation alone. The future will benefit from the new program, he said, although we might not feel it so keenly now. Usual ceremonies will mark the first home game of the baseball season at Nephi next Wednesday, when the strong teams of Payson and Nephi of the Central Utah league meet at the Juab county fair grounds. The two teams are well primed for the opening, and re-Ga- me Observance. ar Belliston Named To Head Local Group a game full of fine play is to mark the season opening here. The Nephi club has had a rather difficult time getting started so far this year, due to weather conditions, but during the past two or three weeks the fellows have been showing plenty of snap and are getting in perfect shape for the big game here next Wednesday. Paul Christonson, veteran of a few years past, will probably start the game on the pitchers' mound for Nephi. Paul has been one o the foremost pitchers in the state and has his arm in fine shape for the opening of the season. Behind the plate this year wiill be Mont Sperry, with Cliff Reese holding down the first base Job. Other probable players and positions are: Second base. Grant Sperry; shortstop, Elmer Facer; third base. Max Davis or Howard Blackham; Theodore outfield, Ray Lunt, "Bob" Howard and Clarence Cowan. Reserves, Ross Park. Wallace Ord. Merlin Orme and Nils Chris- tenson. The support of all residents of Nephi for the baseball team on their opening day and throughout the season Is asked for the team. They deserve the backing of the people of Nephi, not only for thetr sportsmanship, but also for their continued attempt to put Nephi "on the map." The game is to begin at 4 p. m.
