I ill MiN'aughton LOS ANGELES A rather readjustment of values is taking plat in the cattle markets. Middle western and eastern market, faced with a real shortage of fat cattle, have had phenomon-all- y high, prices during the first five months of the yar. Pacific Coast markets advanced sharply during the first two or three month period of the year but supplies have been fully adequate to meet the home demands and there has even been a surplus of fat beef In California which has moved out to h"lp supply the middle western and eastern clemrtnds. The result has been that our Coast markets have not had the extremely high prices that have featured middle western markets. High prices have helped to build up fat cattle In the middle west T and the acute Bhortage of beef In the eastern half or the United States has been considerably rel- J ieved. The result has been a readjustment of values. Cattle prices during the past month have suffered a sharp In the Middle west. On the Pacific coast prices did hit the high peaks and the coast markets have been pretty well established for the past 3 months, with only minor losses In values. As far as the Los Angeles market Is concerned, it appears that we will have plentiful supplies of beer cattle for another thirty days due to the ract that summer temperatures and wind havte drid up a large proportion or our valley pastures and ranges. In a greater part of California, cattle are no longer making gains on available natural feed but there Is an abundance of dry feed vaulable for carrying cattle through until the fall rains. Some supplemental feeding of cot tonseed cake will help hold the weights. But mast of the fat grass beer must be moved to slaughter within another thirty days, which accounts ror the ract that in the past weeks, receipts or cattle at the Los Angeles Union Stock yards numbered around 7,000 head, the largest week s supply ever received on that market with exception of one period in 1934, when distressed government drought cattle were being rushed to slaughter. It Is reassuring to the cattle business to realize that In the face of this heavy run of beef, prices have help up on the open market. Prices generally have held up steadily against losses of a full cent a pound in the middle west. The time is not far distant when the Los Angeles market must begin to draw upon feedlot supplies, which are below normal in this state, and upon other states for supplies. This will place the Coast packer in the position of competing with the middle west for beef supplies and furure Caast prices will depend up-c- n the trend of the market at Chicago and the Missouri river markets. While it is not within the of this comentator to in any oredict market trends, it is worth while to know that expert trade opinion generally favors some increased strengthening; in Pacific Coast livestock prices as the summer advances.
