Lest someone be caught unawares this article is to sound the alarm that there is a thief in our midst which is steadily marching on to the premises of the people of this county, robbing and pillaging as h'e goes. This is not a thief who wears a black bandage about his face to conceal his identity, but one who wears a white crown which can be seen by all both day and night. His depredations are just as great as though he held a gun and possessed himself of the property and produce of all whom he ap. proches. This thief is Mr. White Top Weed. He is a hard one to manage and will call for hte co.. operation of all to stop his progress. This comment is made, by the Bureau of Dairy ing, United States Department of Agriculture, in the foreward of a directory of cooperative bull associations in the United States. The statement is based on the comparative milk and butterfat records of large numbers of cows and of their daughters sired by purebred bulls. In milk production the daughters excelled their dams by 14.5 per cent, on an average, and in butterfat production by 16 per cent. These figures represent an increased milk yield of 966 pounds and an increased butterfat yield of 48 pounds. That the increases are due to qualities inherited from the purebred sires is a fair conclusion based on the knowledge that in nearly every case the dams and daughters were in the same herd and received the same care. The new directory shows that at the beginning of this year there were 220 cooperative bull associations in the United States. These associations owned 1,003 carefully selected purebred dairy sires. While the increase in production because of good breeding is very noticeable in the generation, the benefits are also ac . cumulative, though the gains are usually less rapid in subsequent PRORATE AM) GUARDIANSHIP NOTICES.
