A drastic measure against immigration during the next year was adopted on February lit by the senate, which by CI to 2 passed the Dillingham Immigration bill after adding amendments to Increase Its re strictive features. The bill, it Is estimated, would limit immigrants during the next twelve months to slightly over 855,000. The bill was adopted as a substi tute for the Johnson bill, passed by the house. The latter would bar for a year all immigrants, except rela tives of aliens now here. The bills' go to conference for adjustment. Advocates of tflie Dillingham substi tute declared that ii would keep out more immigrants than the Johnson measure. Both bills would go Into effect with in two months, with the Dillingham measure effective for fifteen and the Johnson bill for fourteen months. It took the senate less than five hours to dispose of the immigration legislation. The two senators opposing passage were France, Republican, Maryland, and Reed, Democrat, Mis souri. Before passing tthe substitute, the senate defeated, 43 to 19, a motion to adopt the Johnson bill. Forty per cent less Immigrants would be admitted under the Dillingham bill than as reported by the senate Immigration committee. This was accomplished by reducing the ''basis of immigration from 5 to 3 per cent of the number of aliens here according to the 1910 census. The amendment was offered by Senator Harrison, Demo crat, Mississippi, who led the fight to make tfhe legislation more drastic. Under another amendment, wives and children of nliens who have ap plied for citizenship would be given amendment Another preference. struck out a clause authorizing admissions when deemed justifiable as a "measure of humanity." 355,-00- 202 litis 1 CIS 6 LUKe NEW BILLS 1 Scientific coiiecto si Manager URoomsContinental Bank B'lcU3 LAKE City. Jut In a certain prison there have been several attempts to commit suicide. This desire to die has given the wardens much trouble and anxiety. A few days ago a warden entered a cell to find the inmate preparing to hang himself. He was standing on his stool and trying to throw the end of a strip of torn blanket around one of the cell bars. The other end was around his neck. "You're making a mess of it," said the weary warden. "Let me help you." In a trice the blanket rope was about the bar and the noose properly fixed. The warden gave a tug. He tugged and tugged until the man was raised from the stool until he was standing on air. There be was held until his eyes and hands made eloquent appeal for release. "That's the way," said the warden, releasing htm. "Now try It yourself." But the prisoner has not tried it. He had decided to live. "No," replied the mother. "Well." suld the child, "It fell down and broke three flower pots. I told daddy you'd be cross." "Oh. dear!" said mother. "I hope your daddy hasn't hurt himself."
