In 1879 the renowned De Beer's mine was discovered by a Turk and he immediately staked out his claims. By this lime things were very lively. All the land near by was seized and the farms changed hands, and the new proprietors imposed heavy taxes on the diggers which led to disputes. The government took part in the question which aroused the diggers to action. They rose in rebellion and hoisted a black flag, but it fortunately passed off without bloodshed.
