S John orest service sailed today from tiffa, ew York for British Guiana to Bea inspect greenheart timber to he ised in the construction of dockpX and other marine works for t,Y Panama canal. He koes a' J request of the isthmian c commission, in order that the CTlv gineers may be eure, tnat iney ire getting genuine'greenheart timber, for which a number of i lferior substitutes are offered. Genuine grenheart has the reputation of being the most re distant wood to the a 1 1 a c k of marine borers and to decay. Borers are especially bad in tropical waters. The wood is, in addition, hard, heavy, and durable. and not subject to damage from impact and wear. Indisputable records show that the best grades of this wood surpass iron and iteel as to lasting qualities in contact with salt water. It has oeen known and used since 1TC9. Logs have remained intact under water for 100 years. Lock gates have been in English nade of it for years, and the on ty limit of their durability so far nas been the length of service ol iheiriron bolts and fastenings, which usually can be renewed Green without much trouble. aeart in Liverpool lock ouilt in 185C, removed to allow a leepeningand widening of the 'hip channel in 1894. was used ver again when the gates wer econstructed. The and enders of the !ock gates at Pan-tm- a will be made of greenheart, and much of the docks will be constructed of the same mattri-i- l. canals gates sills Nanpen's ship, the Fram, ano he antarctic vessels, Discovery, ised by one of the Scott expedi tions, and the Gauss, used ty Orygalski, were all planked with greenheart. The exceedingly great durabi iity of the wood is said to be due, t least in part, to the presenc if an alkaloid, which is used as substitute for cinchens, thebasit A quimie. A number of other woods which row with greenheart in the tro- oical forests of the Guianas re emble it so closely that they ate bast likely to deceive even an expert. Ihey nave many ol the qualities of the genuine timber, but in a lesser degree. Some are quite in ferior, and it is esgectial that year, they should be avoided. In order fr that the canal commissioner ma) be sure of the right wood, it ask ed the orest service to assist it n an investigation of the green heart situation in British Guiant and Mr. Mell's present trip is result of that request.
