As far aa I am a war ! It Is TmlversaHy So far we have traced some of the necessary conditions of the atar. Let ua now try and discover the star that fulfils these conditlona. In doing so we shall briefly discuss the different theories put forth and held by different people, some of them men of great eminence In their own particular sphere. We shall also show the untenablenesa of the different hypothesis. I The etar waa not an angel. No less a father of the church than held thia view. He believed It waa an angelic apparition. No doubt angeia were sent on messages from Heaven to men, and the Angel Gabriel waa used in the Annunciation. But the angelic vision would disappear with th accomplishment of the oV Ject. Not o the atar; It remained. II The atar waa not a meteor. Thia view haa been largely held. It la asserted that some kind of meteoric phenomenon would best meet the of the case. But any meteor drawn to the earth would either be consumed by the atmospheric friction or else would fall to the ground and become extinguished. Its appearance would be almost momentary. III The atar waa not a comet. One of the greatest fathers of the church, Oregen. held this view. But not all the weight of Oregen'a great scholarship could obtain credence for such a belief. Just recently thia thwry of a comet haa been revived, unconsciously, however, that Orrgen waa the father of 1L Prof. David Forbes in England and Prof. Ferviss In America both claimed to have Identified the Flar of ttethlhem with Halley'a comet. At the time I refuted the theory In an article that appeared !n the ChicaPoet. Motion la characteristic of all the heavenly bodies; and the words of the aacred narrative are, "The star went before them till It came." When first they aaw the atar it occupied a particular apot In the sky. Now, however, It haa a different position, mt reJatrvely because of the change In the field of observation, but absolutely by change of location In the heavens. No doubt the motion was a movement In its orbit This will appear more plainly from our next proposition. S. It was a rUr that had an aiders-tic-e It atood at a particular point In the sky above them. The statement la very distinct: "It came and stood ovor where the young child was." 4. It waa a star that moved in an orbit It bad a periodic time. This ia a most remarkable alatement. We are told that Herod privately learned of the Maet "whit time the atar appeared." The margin of the Revised Veraion glvea ua a better, because a more correct translation of the phrase; It la, "The time of the atar that appeared." But the literal rendering ia "the time of the appearing It waa a atar that bad a relative position In the sky it waa In the east. That star waa Siriua, the brightest In the firmament of heaven. Before we can arrive at our final conclusion It Is necessary to learn something about the Wine Men, or Magi. Who w re the Magl? Where did they come from? The etymology of the word Magi la Involved in much doubt It la generally supposed to be primarily a Persian word, but the Persian Is only a form of the original. Our word Magus, of which Magi ia the plural, Is but the Latin rendering of the Greek Magos, the Persian of which is probably Maz. Max la cognate to MaJ in Major, Mag In Magnus and M?g in Mogas (Raw linson). "It la an intensitlve and means much or all." In Persian name for God, It means the all wise or all powerful. The Irish word Druid mcana wisdom or Magian. It la worthy of record that the Irish Scriptures render "there came wise men from the east" by "there came Druids from the east" The Irish words are: "Draioch o naird ahoir go HSerusalem," which shows the Irish belief that the Druids were Magians. It ia a matter of history that part of the Gaels or Irish in the westward movement of the race rfturned by the valley of the Danube and settled in Asia Minor. They prefixed their own tame to Asia, and called their , abode or Galatia, as It came to he spelled. The sun seemed to shine with a deeper effulgence. Meteors, precursors of some mighty event, flashed athwart the Rky. Comets shot from out the darkness of apace and Illuminated the sign with their fiery flow. Mara and Jupiter and Saturn halted In their orblta to focus their lights Into one mighty blaze In Places. And wondrous Right! The star the Magians' Star his star Sirlus! enters Places, and is now in Jacob! Tbia wondrous event occurred In B. C. 5. The heliacal rising of Siriua took place on the same day In four aucccssive years, the fifth, fourth, third and second 11. C. There is something most remarkable about this heliacal rising. It is on the tame day. But sameness ia unity. It thua symbolizes the Unity of the Deity. Then, assuming that B. C. 4 Is the correct year of the Nativity, which scholars assert, there waa one year before the birth and three after it In the symbolism of niimbera one Is and three Trinity. But the oneUnity beyear fore birth signified the past revelation of God, or unity of the Deity. The three yt-ar- after the birth s symbol- ized the new revelation, the Trinity of Persona. lastly unity and trinity 'one year threo years) equal the complete and perfect number Tour, the yeara that Slrius may be said to have remained in Pisces. This symbolism occurs with the rising of Siriua, which signified the rising of the Light of the World. It waa as if, whilst heaven's arches rarg with the angels load acclaim, 8lrlus flashed through space, "Arise! Shine! For thy light is come!" -- f RaTcnawood, Nativity, U02. t, Chicago, t.; IMS. of lha Feast - ,- by F. P. f 'v.... Puffy. |
