Many who were not in favor of the project at its inception have expressed delight with the new "white way". At . the same time, many criticisms have been expressed ex-pressed of the "trimming" of the Honey Locust trees which bordered the Main Street. Many have asked "What price new lights? First, we give up parking stalls and now we are forced to give up some of the more beautiful trees of Delta." One civic-minded resident has researched the history of the trees and has found that they were part of a State Beautification Program and that the initial cost amount ed to approximately $3000 of taxpayers money. Honey Locust trees are a slow-growing variety of hardwood and those along Delta Main Street greatly en-. en-. hanced its appearance during late summer and early fall days when their leaves turned to gold contrasting beautifully beauti-fully with the deep green of other trees. Their aesthetic value was only matched by the welcome shade which they provided during the hot mid-summer days. County Agent Marven Ogden is usually available to give advise on trimming shrubbery and trees. May we ask "Was he consulted?" It was pointed out at City Council meeting Monday night that a Honey Locust tree is an entirely different variety from the Siberian Elm and therefore requires different dif-ferent treatment. It was also brought out that no amount of criticism would bring the trees back. In this we concur. But, trees can be replaced. And in the future perhaps more wisdom needs to be exercised in the "trimming" of trees by the Street Dept. crew or whoever authorized this particular case.
