Show page 8 Millard County Chronicle Thurs., October 19, 1961 i Millard Band Slates Top Orchestra For October 30th In 1949 when the band business and ballroom were in a national depression Mercury Records, who Ralph formerly recorded for, felt that a really great dance orchestra could once again develop a fervent following. Art Talmadge, then Vice-President, Vice-President, picked Ralph as the musician mu-sician who could build a band after af-ter the -tradition set In the '30s by GTenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Mercury put their new-iy-signed trumpeter on wax and the road and soon after he became known as "Marterie, the man who brought back dancing." "Downbeat magazine changed v'r ! RALPH MARTERIE Marterie's billing again when, in 1956, they polled those really hep hoppers, the nation's colleges, to find the number one college favorite. favor-ite. Marterie was so far out in front he was for a while thereafter officially of-ficially known as Ralph Marterie and His Downbeat Orchestra. A poll taken by Cash Box proved him to be "the man with more hit records than any other leader and the juke box operators' favorite" but this, of course, was a little to long to spread across any ballroom's "coming "com-ing attraction" marquee. RALPH MARTERIE. THE GALLIVANTIN' GABRIEL Ralph Marterie and his Orchestra appearing in person at Fillmore, Utah, on October 30, is more constantly con-stantly on tour than any other big-name oichestra in the business. College and ballroom playdates follow fol-low each other so fast, it can be said that his hot trumpet never gets a chance to cool down. In fact, this gallivanlin' Gabriel has spent so many years as a patron of crosscountry cross-country hotels and motels that "in self defense" he's recently built a highly modern motor hotel of his own, the Sheridan-Chase on Chicago's Chi-cago's North Shore, "I have to get some of that room-rent - money back some way," he says. LaWana Mitchell, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mitchell, Delta, had an appendectomy Saturday Sat-urday at the Fillmore IDS Hospital. She recovered well and will return home Thursday. Permits may be obtained ahead of time by local hunters and out of town hunters by applying to Ferrin Lovell, Delta, WMHA secretary. secre-tary. The permit shall entitle the hunter hunt-er to hunt in the entire posted area and shall be carried on the person while in such area and be conspicuously conspic-uously displayed. Each landowner petitioning into the posted hunting area will be furnished two permits by the Hospital Hos-pital Association. Eevenue from the sale of the permits will be used exclusively to help defray the cost of building the new hospital. The state does not receive any monies whatsoever. As the hospital tax district has already been established, establish-ed, any money received from this project will lessen future taxes for the building, operation and maintenance main-tenance of the new hospital. It is therefore, a very distinct advantage to the landowner to sign up all acreage in- the hunting unit. Officers and Directors of the West Millard Hospital Association are very appreciative of the exf cellent cooperation they have re-1 ceived from the landowners in making this project a reality. Each church ward contributed personnel for the sign-up as well as the West Millard Wildlife and the West Desert Des-ert Bow Hunters. The locals are touted as being "up" and willing to give the Fillmore lads a blistering argument. The victor should remain undefeated the remainder re-mainder of the season. For about twenty years Delta has managed to vanquish everything every-thing in sight. The outstanding exception ex-ception is Millard, of course. In the past, mention that name, and the Rabbits fell apart and became just another bunch of sandlotters playing play-ing touch. Offense and defense completely disappeared and they folded up and silently stole away to the locker rooms. Today the Rabbits are hoping things will be different. There's no doubt about it. They will show up for the match. They have an imposing im-posing record to back them up. They opened their practice campaign cam-paign by running over Dixie of St. George 32-12, routed Nevada's Lincoln High 29-7, dropped a win to Class A Payson, dumped Grants-ville Grants-ville 31-12, and battered Wasatch Academy 46-0 in the initial league play. Last week they racked up North Sanpete 27-0 at Mt. Pleasant. Coach Taft Watts' Eagles blitzed a powerful Cedar City eleven in their opener 40-0 and have trampled trampl-ed everyone else except two Class A schools, Spanish Fork (one of Utah's foremost aggregations) and Tooele. Wasatch fell before their terrific cannonading last week, 45 to 7. Just a mite less than the typical typ-ical Millard seasonal performances. Rabbit mentor Horlacher classifies classi-fies the Fillmore gang as "big and fast, and very mean." Their leading lead-ing boogeyman is a monster by the name of Lawson, who handles the fullback chores. He scales upwards up-wards of 200 lbs. on the cleats and is reputed to be a terror, up the middle. Along with "Mr. Inside" is the "Outside" Bushnell, equally as large, who packs the mail on the sweeps. The rest are all rough and rugged. They have to be to play for Watts, who has claimed the Utah championship six times since 1950, an awesome record indeed. Returning to Utah's big game for the Rabbits is Thayne Henrie and Gary Tolbert. Lonnie Hales, stellar tailback, is recovering from a twisted twist-ed ankle incurred at North Sanpete San-pete and should be ready. Don't underrate this player, he is just the finest you'll see. .The rest of the wonderful crew will be on hand; Pace, Knight, Adams, Huff, Lyman, Bishop, Moody, Doolin, and the whole bunch. The Red and White is hungry for success. They want to win this one badly. And they can. They will have to ignore Millard's record, beat that old psychological mental block that the Eagles are invincible. invinci-ble. DHS is the equal of Fillmore and if the old pigskin takes the right bounce they can be in there all the way. Come on, Delta, give the student body and your loyal fans a cause for great celebration at the final whistle. Let's block and tackle like never before This is an opportunity to see some of the finest football played anywhere. These high schooiers are our boys and our neighbors, too. They represent our town and the area. We admire their unflinching unflinch-ing spirit and appreciate their efforts. ef-forts. Why not turn out this afternoon after-noon and root them on.
