Show Page 8 Millard County Chronicle Thurs., October 12, 1961 WEST DESERT ROUND-UP SHIRLEY We "certainly are enjoying a beautiful storm at this time out here. It is soaking into the ground and not flooding too much down the. washes. The mountains are covered with snow. South through Trout Creek, Gandy, and Garrison, there has been snow on the valley floor. If anyone has winter grain in the ground out here, they stand a good chance of making a good return harvest next summer. The Harvest Ball was a grand success! Our Young Women's Mutual Mu-tual Improvement Association officers of-ficers took the lead in insuring its success. May we give public thanks to the Relief Society sisters and the Neilson family of Trout Creek for making a beautiful quilt that was given away.. Mrs. Cora L. Sa-bey Sa-bey won the drawing. The Neilson sisters, Laura and Sarah, first planned the party and worked with Eudeene T. Parker, YWMIA president, and Melvin John Hatch, branch president, to have the Harvest Ball come true. Many thanks to this young, enthused body of people that planned so carefully every thoughtful detail. A Harvest Ball Queen was chosen and her two attendants. Our queen was Erma Bates of Gandy, first attendant at-tendant was Joy Hicks of Ibapah, and second attendant was Mary Sims of Callao. SOIL PROFILE By Brad Hatch Soil Conservation Service This week, Oct. 8-14, has been proclaimed National Fire Prevention Preven-tion Week by President John F. Kennedy. In his proclamation he states: "An unconsiderable number of lives and approximately a billion dollars worth of property are lost each year because of fires which could have been prevented or controlled". con-trolled". A study by the National Fire Protection Pro-tection Association shows that "48 percent of dwelling fires In rural areas were due to mis-used, overheated, over-heated, and defective heating or cooking equipment, flues and chimneys. chim-neys. Fifteen percent were caused by smoking or matches; explosives, 11; incendiary (deliberate), and electrical, 4; and 15, undetermined." undeter-mined." The following suggestions are given for preventing farm fires: Keep your home free of all fire hazards by regular inspections. Avoid carelessness with smoking or matches. Do not allow trash or oily rags to accumulate in homes or farm buildings. A crean house seldom burns. Keep attics, lofts, cellars, and other storage places clear of trash and accessible for firefight-ing. firefight-ing. Remove grass, weeds, and dry vegetation from around buildings and along fence rows. Burn trash regularly, in small quantities, in a safe place, and at a safe distance from buildings, preferably pre-ferably in a good receptacle. Check local regulations. Replace damaged or worn lightning light-ning rods or wires. Be sure ground connections are secure. j s.'V. VCCKA, DiJTil.LF.ti ftdm IX CPA,N ROBERTS In spite of threatening weather, a good group showed up from places as far as Wells, Nev., and Delta, Grantsville and Salt Lake. The party came to a close at the time roosters start to crow. So we were told, it was 4:00 a.m. when the lights went out and cars lights scattered in the darkness upon ev ery road. It seems that birthdays come in series out here. This next week will be popping with birthday wishes. October 12th is George W. Tripp's 91st birthday. This same day is Hazel Falkenburg's "getting younger" birthday. God bless these wonderful persons. Following close behind, on Friday the Thirteenth, is Cora L. Sabey's youthful birthday. birth-day. These fine people are some of the best in the world. We would like at this time to give special tribute to George Washington Tripp. He is the grandson grand-son of George Boyd, a member of the Mormon Batalion, who worked out here in Callao harvesting meadow mea-dow grass for the Pony Express over 100 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Alder spent the weekend in Salt Lake. Edgar attended Teacher's Institute. My sister, Gwen, was .married Oct. 7, to Keith Ridgley of Provo. They spent their honeymoon with Shirley and Dan Roberts. Our ward show will be Saturday, October 14, we are having a party for our out-going branch presidency, presiden-cy, they were in something like 7 years and did a very good job. We want to thank them for their work. We held our Relief Society Oct. 4. Our theology lesson was given by Shirley Roberts. We hope we can get more of our ladies to attend. at-tend. This Association is doing a great deal of advertising and promotion to attract buyers to this feeder sale. The sale will feature stocker and feeder cattle, however, at the conclusion of the sale odd lots and slaughter cattle will also be sold at auction. Cattle consigned for this special sale must be consigned through one of the above mentioned commission com-mission firms. The Association requests re-quests that cattlemen interested in consigning cattle to this sale write or call John Clay and Company, Peck Brothers Livestock Commision Company, or the Producers Livestock Live-stock Marketing Association, advising advis-ing them of how many cattle will be consigned so that proper advertising adver-tising can be given these cattle. These firms have also tentatively scheduled anpther show and sale for the middle of November. Council Scout Camp Needs Your Help EMERGENCY SERVICE: Isn't service ser-vice the pride of scouting? The Utah National Parks Council issues a call to all service minded older scouts, explorers, and scouters, and especially to Order of the Arrow Members (past or present). At the present time Camp Maple Dell is faced with a real emergency and we would like to solicit your help. We have found that our wat er line at camp is wholly inadequate inade-quate to give fire protection to our lodge and other camp buildings during the winter months. In order to correct the situation we need to install 1000 feet of new water lines. We have thought of hiring a back hoe, but have discovered that because of the trees and interference, in-terference, this is not practical. To be a part of EMERGENCY SERVICE and to feel the pride of giving, we are asking . . . would you be willing to give us a day of your valuable time as a service project. We would like you to meet at camp October 14th by 9 a.m. Bring with you a shovel or pick (both if possible). Lunch will be provided by the council, and we should finish the project by 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Yes this is a job of work but come with your friends, and enjoy a day of service in the brotherhood of scouting. Boyd R.
